  • Judg 19:16-20:21 : 16 In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim and was staying temporarily in Gibeah, though the people of the place were Benjaminites. 17 When he looked up and saw the traveler in the town square, the old man asked, "Where are you going, and where have you come from?" 18 The man answered, "We are traveling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to the house of the Lord, but no one has taken me into their home. 19 We have straw and feed for our donkeys, as well as bread and wine for me, your servant, for the woman with me, and for the young man who is with your servants. We lack nothing." 20 The old man said, "Peace to you! Let me take care of all your needs, but do not spend the night in the square." 21 He brought him into his house and provided fodder for the donkeys. They washed their feet, ate, and drank. 22 While they were enjoying themselves, some wicked men of the city surrounded the house. They pounded on the door and said to the old man, the owner of the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him." 23 The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers, do not commit such an evil act. Since this man has come into my house, do not do this disgraceful act. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. Let me bring them out to you now, and you may abuse them and do to them whatever you think best. But do not commit this disgraceful act against this man. 25 But the men refused to listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and brought her outside to them. They raped her and abused her throughout the night until morning, and at dawn, they let her go. 26 At daybreak, the woman came and fell at the doorway of the man's house where her master was staying, and she lay there until it was light. 27 Her master got up in the morning, opened the doors of the house, and went out to continue on his way. There was the woman, his concubine, lying at the doorway of the house with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, "Get up, let us go." But there was no answer. So he put her on the donkey, and the man set out for home. 29 When he reached his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine limb by limb into twelve pieces and sent them throughout the territory of Israel. 30 Everyone who saw it said, "Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen since the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!" 1 Then all the Israelites went out, and the entire assembly came together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba and the land of Gilead, to the LORD at Mizpah. 2 The leaders of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, took their positions in the assembly of the people of God—four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords. 3 The people of Benjamin heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites said, "Tell us, how did this terrible crime happen?" 4 The Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered, "My concubine and I came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night. 5 While we were there, the men of Gibeah attacked me. They surrounded the house during the night and intended to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died. 6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel because they committed a vile and disgraceful act in Israel. 7 Now, all you Israelites, give your verdict and advice here and now. 8 All the people stood together as one and said, "None of us will go to his tent or turn back to his house. 9 This is what we will do to Gibeah: We will decide by casting lots. 10 We will take ten men out of every hundred, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand across all the tribes of Israel. They will gather provisions for the army, so we can act against Gibeah in Benjamin for their disgraceful act in Israel. 11 So all the men of Israel were united together as one man against the city. 12 The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What is this awful crime that has been committed among you?" 13 Now hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. 14 Instead, the Benjaminites gathered from their cities to Gibeah to go out to battle against the Israelites. 15 On that day, the Benjaminites mustered twenty-six thousand men armed with swords from their towns, not counting the seven hundred elite troops from Gibeah. 16 Among all these were seven hundred elite troops who were left-handed, each of them able to sling a stone at a hair and not miss. 17 The Israelites, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords, all experienced warriors. 18 The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjaminites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first." 19 The next morning the Israelites got up and camped near Gibeah. 20 The Israelites went out to fight the Benjaminites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. 21 The Benjaminites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.
