He began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, built a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and constructed a tower. Then he leased it to farmers and went on a journey.

At the appointed time, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

Then he began to tell the people this parable: 'A man planted a vineyard, leased it to some farmers, and went away for a long time.

At harvest time, he sent a servant to the farmers so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

He proceeded to send another servant, but they also beat him, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

Then he sent a third one, but they wounded him also and threw him out.

Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.'

But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.'

So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?'

He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others. When they heard this, they said, 'May it never happen!'
