He said, "They have credited David with tens of thousands but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?" 9 From that day onward, Saul kept a close and suspicious eye on David. 10 The next day, an evil spirit from God came powerfully upon Saul, and he raved inside the house while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand. 11 Saul hurled the spear, saying, "I’ll pin David to the wall." But David evaded him twice. 12 Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed David from his presence and appointed him as a commander over a thousand men. David led the troops out and brought them back in. 14 David succeeded in everything he did because the LORD was with him. 15 When Saul saw how successful David was, he became afraid of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David because he led them in their campaigns. 17 Saul said to David, 'Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage, but you must serve me bravely and fight the LORD’s battles.' For Saul thought, 'I will not raise my hand against him; let the Philistines do that.' 18 But David said to Saul, 'Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?' 19 But when the time came for Merab, Saul’s daughter, to be given to David, she was given instead to Adriel of Meholah in marriage. 20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased. 21 Saul thought, 'I will give her to him so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.' So Saul said to David, 'Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.' 22 Then Saul ordered his servants, 'Speak to David privately and say, "Look, the king likes you, and all his servants love you; now become his son-in-law."' 23 They repeated these words to David. But David said, 'Do you think it is a small matter to become the king’s son-in-law? I’m only a poor man and little known.' 24 When Saul’s servants reported back what David had said, 25 Saul replied, 'Say to David, "The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies."' Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines. 26 When Saul’s servants told David these words, it pleased David to become the king’s son-in-law. However, the allotted time had not yet passed. 27 So David arose and went out with his men, and they struck down two hundred Philistines. David brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage. 28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 Saul grew even more afraid of David. He continually regarded him as an enemy for the rest of his days. 30 The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, but every time they went out, David had more success than all of Saul’s servants, and he became highly esteemed.

And the man would answer, 'Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.' 3 Then Absalom would say to him, 'Look, your claims are good and valid, but there is no one appointed by the king to hear you.' 4 And Absalom would add, 'If only I were appointed judge in the land, then every man who has a dispute or case could come to me, and I would ensure he receives justice.' 5 Whenever a man approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out, take hold of him, and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king for judgment, and he stole the hearts of the people of Israel. 7 At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, 'Please allow me to go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I made to the LORD.' 8 For your servant made a vow while I was living in Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD.’ 9 The king said to him, 'Go in peace.' So he got up and went to Hebron. 10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel with this message: 'As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, say, “Absalom is king in Hebron!”' 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom. They had been invited and went innocently, unaware of anything. 12 While he was offering the sacrifices, Absalom also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his hometown of Giloh. And the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept increasing. 13 Then a messenger came to David and reported, 'The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.' 14 David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, 'Arise, let us flee, or there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Hurry and leave, or he will quickly overtake us, bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.' 15 The king’s servants replied to him, 'Your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.' 16 So the king set out, and all his household followed him on foot. But the king left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace. 17 The king went out with all the people following him, and they stopped at a place some distance away. 18 All his servants passed by him, along with all the Kerethites, Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had come with him from Gath, marching past in front of the king. 19 The king said to Ittai the Gittite, 'Why should you go with us too? Go back and stay with the new king, for you are a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.' 20 ‘You only came yesterday, so why should I make you wander with us today? I must go wherever I can. Return and take your brothers with you. May kindness and faithfulness be with you.’
