Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36 Still others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawed in two, and they were killed with the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, and mistreated. 38 The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts, and on mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. 39 And all of these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised. 40 Since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us. 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set before us. 2 Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising its shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
