  • Neh 2:12-3:16 : 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem; nor was there any animal with me, except the one I rode upon. 13 And I went out by night through the valley gate, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire. 14 Then I went on to the fountain gate and to the king's pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass. 15 Then I went up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned. 16 And the rulers did not know where I had gone, or what I had done; I had not yet told it to the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the rulers, or the rest who did the work. 17 Then I said to them, You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me, and also the king's words that he had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. 19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they mocked us and despised us, and said, What is this thing that you do? Will you rebel against the king? 20 Then I answered them and said to them, The God of heaven will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial in Jerusalem. 1 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the sheep gate. They sanctified it and set up its doors; even to the tower of Meah they sanctified it, to the tower of Hananeel. 2 And next to him built the men of Jericho. And next to them built Zaccur the son of Imri. 3 But the fish gate was built by the sons of Hassenaah, who also laid its beams, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars. 4 Next to them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next to them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next to them repaired Zadok the son of Baana. 5 And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their Lord. 6 Moreover the old gate was repaired by Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its locks, and its bars. 7 And next to them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, to the throne of the governor on this side of the river. 8 Next to him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next to him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem to the broad wall. 9 And next to them repaired Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of half of Jerusalem. 10 And next to them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even opposite his house. And next to him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah. 11 Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahathmoab, repaired another section, and the tower of the furnaces. 12 And next to him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of half of Jerusalem, he and his daughters. 13 The valley gate was repaired by Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they built it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars, and a thousand cubits on the wall to the dung gate. 14 But the dung gate was repaired by Malchiah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Bethhaccerem; he built it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars. 15 But the fountain gate was repaired by Shallun the son of Colhozeh, the ruler of part of Mizpah; he built it, covered it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars, and the wall of the pool of Siloah by the king's garden, and to the stairs that descend from the city of David. 16 After him repaired Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half of Bethzur, to the place opposite the sepulchres of David, and to the pool that was constructed, and to the house of the mighty.
  • Neh 4:2 : 2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish that are burned?
  • Neh 4:6 : 6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together up to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.
  • Neh 4:9-9 : 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. 10 And Judah said, The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. 11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know or see anything until we come in among them and kill them, and cause the work to cease. 12 And when the Jews who lived near them came, they said to us ten times, From whatever place you turn, they will be upon us. 13 Therefore I set men in the lowest parts behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people according to their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
  • Neh 4:17-23 : 17 Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked in the construction, and with the other held a weapon. 18 For every builder had his sword girded at his side as he built. And the one who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 19 Then I said to the nobles, the rulers, and the rest of the people, The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us. 21 So we labored in the work, and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. 22 At the same time I also said to the people, Let every man and his servant stay at night in Jerusalem, that they may be a guard to us by night, and a labor force by day. 23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes, except for washing.
  • Neh 13:8-9 : 8 This upset me very much; so I threw all of Tobiah’s household goods out of the room. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the rooms; and I brought back into them the vessels of the house of God, along with the grain offerings and the frankincense. 10 I also realized that the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, so the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field. 11 So I contended with the rulers, and said, Why has the house of God been forsaken? And I gathered them together and placed them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, for they were considered trustworthy, and their task was to distribute to their brethren. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for its services. 15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys, as well as bringing in wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day they sold provisions. 16 Men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, What evil thing is this that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers do this, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath. 19 So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the Sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I warned them, and said to them, Why do you spend the night around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time on they came no more on the Sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and come and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy. 23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab; 24 and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of each people. 25 So I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. 26 Did not King Solomon of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless, pagan women caused even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women? 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore, I drove him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. 30 Thus I cleansed them of everything foreign, and I assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service, 31 and for the offering of wood at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
  • Job 14:7-9 : 7 For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its tender branch will not cease. 8 Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground; 9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud and bring forth branches like a plant. 10 But man dies and wastes away; yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? 11 As the waters fail from the sea and the flood decays and dries up, 12 So man lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep.
