And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and bring him: for we will not sit down till he comes here. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and with a beautiful countenance, and good to look upon. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
  • 1 Sam 17:15-54 : 15 But David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16 The Philistine drew near morning and evening and presented himself for forty days. 17 Jesse said to David his son, Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers. 18 Carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand and see how your brothers fare and take their pledge. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20 David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had commanded him; he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for battle. 21 Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army. 22 David left his baggage in the care of the baggage keeper, ran to the army, and greeted his brothers. 23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath named Goliath came from the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before, and David heard them. 24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were very afraid. 25 The men of Israel said, Have you seen this man that has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. The king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches, will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. 26 David spoke to the men standing by him, asking, What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 The people answered him in this manner, saying, So shall it be done for the man who kills him. 28 Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men and Eliab's anger burned against David. He said, Why have you come down here? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the wickedness of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle. 29 David said, What have I done now? Is there not a cause? 30 He turned from him to another and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before. 31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. 32 David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 Saul said to David, You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are just a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth. 34 David said to Saul, Your servant kept his father's sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. When it rose against me, I caught it by its beard, struck it, and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, Go, and the LORD be with you. 38 Saul clothed David with his armor, put a bronze helmet on his head, and clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David fastened his sword over his armor and tried to go, but he was not used to them. David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I am not used to them. And David took them off. 40 He took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the brook, put them in the shepherd's bag, in the pouch he had, and with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. 41 The Philistine came closer and closer to David, and the man who carried his shield went in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was just a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 The Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the field. 45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. I will give the bodies of the Philistine army this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. 48 When the Philistine arose and came near to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine in the forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine, and killed him. There was no sword in David's hand. 51 David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 The men of Israel and Judah arose, shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance to the valley and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell along the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. 53 The Israelites returned from chasing after the Philistines and plundered their camp. 54 David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put the Philistine's armor in his tent.
