And he took a bow and arrows. 16 He said to the king of Israel, "Put your hand on the bow." And he put his hand upon it, and Elisha put his hands on the king's hands. 17 He said, "Open the window eastward." And he opened it. Then Elisha said, "Shoot." And he shot. He said, "The arrow of the LORD'S deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you shall smite the Syrians in Aphek, until you have destroyed them." 18 He said, "Take the arrows." And he took them. He said to the king of Israel, "Strike the ground." And he struck three times and stopped. 19 The man of God was angry with him and said, "You should have struck five or six times; then you would have smitten Syria until it was destroyed. But now you shall smite Syria only three times." 20 Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the beginning of the year. 21 As they were burying a man, they saw a band of raiders and cast the man into the tomb of Elisha; when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet. 22 Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. 23 The LORD was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and had regard for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he would not destroy them, nor cast them from his presence as yet. 24 So Hazael king of Syria died, and Benhadad his son reigned in his place. 25 Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took back from Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken from Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times Joash defeated him and recovered the cities of Israel.
  • 2 Kgs 14:8-9 : 8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us meet face to face. 9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give your daughter to my son as wife, and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trampled the thistle. 10 You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up; boast of this, and stay at home, for why should you meddle to your hurt, that you should fall, you and Judah with you? 11 But Amaziah would not listen. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah met face to face at Bethshemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to their tents. 13 And Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Bethshemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits. 14 And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria. 15 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 16 And Jehoash rested with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.

  • 2 Chr 25:17-24 : 17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face. 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle in Lebanon sent to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, Give your daughter to my son as wife; and there passed by a wild beast in Lebanon, and trampled down the thistle. 19 You say, Lo, you have struck the Edomites; and your heart is lifted up to boast; stay now at home; why should you meddle to your hurt, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you? 20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it came from God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash the king of Israel went up, and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. 23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, along with the hostages, and returned to Samaria.
