  • Num 16:1-9 : 1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men. 2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the assembly, distinguished in the congregation, men of renown. 3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: why then do you lift yourselves above the congregation of the LORD? 4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face. 5 And he spoke to Korah and to all his company, saying, Tomorrow the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near to Him: even him whom He has chosen will He cause to come near to Him. 6 This do; Take your censers, Korah, and all his company. 7 And put fire in them, and put incense in them before the LORD tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD chooses, he shall be holy: you take too much upon you, sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said to Korah, Hear, I pray you, sons of Levi. 9 Does it seem like a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them? 10 And He has brought you near to Him, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you: and do you seek the priesthood also? 11 For this cause, both you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that you complain against him? 12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: who said, We will not come up. 13 Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, unless you make yourself altogether a prince over us? 14 Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up. 15 And Moses was very angry, and said to the LORD, Respect not their offering: I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I harmed one of them. 16 And Moses said to Korah, Be here with all your company before the LORD, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow. 17 And take each man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring them before the LORD, each man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each of you his censer. 18 And they took each man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on them, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron. 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation. 20 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. 22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will You be angry with all the congregation? 23 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 24 Speak to the congregation, saying, Depart from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. 25 And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins. 27 So they got up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little children. 28 And Moses said, Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of my own will. 29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they are visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD has not sent me. 30 But if the LORD makes a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit; then you shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. 31 And it came to pass, when he had finished speaking all these words, that the ground split apart that was under them. 32 And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, with their houses, and all the men that belonged to Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that belonged to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. 34 And all Israel that were around them fled at their cry: for they said, Lest the earth swallows us up also. 35 And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
  • Num 20:2-5 : 2 And there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron. 3 And the people argued with Moses and spoke, saying, "Would God that we had died when our brothers died before the LORD! 4 And why have you brought the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness so that we and our livestock should die here? 5 And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? • Ps 78:8-9 : 8 And might not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that did not set their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God. 9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. 10 They did not keep the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; 11 And forgot his works, and his wonders that he had shown them. 12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as a heap. 14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. 15 He split the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as from the great depths. 16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. 17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the Most High in the wilderness. 18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their desire. 19 Yes, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? 20 Behold, he struck the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people? 21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel; 22 Because they did not believe in God, and did not trust in his salvation: 23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, 24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the grain of heaven. 25 Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full. 26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind. 27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea: 28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, all around their habitations. 29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire; 30 They were not estranged from their desire. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and struck down the chosen men of Israel. 32 For all this they sinned still, and did not believe for his wondrous works. 33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. 34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and sought diligently after God. 35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer. 36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. 37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant. 38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them: yes, many a time he turned away his anger, and did not stir up all his wrath. 39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and comes not again. 40 How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! 41 Yes, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy. 43 How he had worked his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: 44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their streams, that they could not drink. 45 He sent various sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. 46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labor unto the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost. 48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. 49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. 50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; 51 And struck all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the dwellings of Ham: 52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. 53 And he led them on safely, so that they did not fear: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had acquired. 55 He cast out the nations also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. 56 Yet they tempted and provoked the Most High God, and did not keep his testimonies: 57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. 58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their carved images. 59 When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel: 60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men; 61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. 62 He gave his people over also to the sword; and was angry with his inheritance. 63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given in marriage. 64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation. 65 Then the Lord awoke as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts because of wine. 66 And he struck his enemies in the rear: he put them to a perpetual reproach. 67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim: 68 But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved. 69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he has established forever. 70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: 71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. 72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
