  • 1 Kgs 12:1-9 : 1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2 And it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was still in Egypt, heard of it (for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt), 3 that they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4 Your father made our yoke grievous; therefore, make your father's grievous service and his heavy yoke which he put upon us lighter, and we will serve you. 5 And he said to them, Depart for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 6 And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do you advise that I should answer this people? 7 And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him, 9 and he said to them, What counsel do you give that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father put upon us lighter? 10 And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shall you speak to this people who spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter for us; thus shall you say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's waist. 11 And now, whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men that they gave him, 14 and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15 Therefore the king did not listen to the people, for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform His word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 16 So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents. 17 But as for the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, so that he died. Therefore King Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

  • Isa 19:11-14 : 11 Surely the princes of Zoan are fools; the counsel of the wise counselors of Pharaoh has become brutish. How can you say to Pharaoh, 'I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?' 12 Where are they? Where are your wise men? Let them tell you now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts has purposed against Egypt. 13 The princes of Zoan are become fools; the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they who are the foundation of its tribes. 14 The LORD has mingled a perverse spirit in its midst, and they have caused Egypt to err in every work, like a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
  • Acts 15:6-9 : 6 And the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said to them, Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God made a choice among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as He did to us; 9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. 12 Then all the multitude kept silent, and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring what miracles and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles by them. 13 And after they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, listen to me: 14 Simeon has declared how God at first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name. 15 And this agrees with the words of the prophets, as it is written, 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; and I will build again its ruins, and I will set it up: 17 That the rest of mankind might seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, says the Lord, who does all these things. 18 Known to God are all His works from the beginning of the world. 19 Therefore, my judgment is that we should not trouble those who from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write to them to abstain from the pollution of idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.
