All of them were mighty warriors. 8 Then Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots, and he came as far as Mareshah. 9 Asa went out to meet him, and they took up positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah. 10 Asa called to the Lord his God and said, "Lord, there is no one like You to help the powerless against the mighty. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 The people of Judah gathered together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek Him. 5 Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD before the new courtyard. 6 He said: 'LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, and no one can withstand you.' 7 'Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham, your friend?' 8 They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your name, saying, 9 'If disaster comes upon us—whether the sword, judgment, plague, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in your presence (for your name is in this temple) and cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.' 10 'But now, here are the men from Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whose land you would not let Israel invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them.' 11 'See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance.' 12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. 13 All the men of Judah, with their wives, children, and little ones, stood there before the LORD. 14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly. 15 He said: 'Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.' 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.' 18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. 20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, 'Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.' 21 Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed singers to sing to the LORD and give praise in the splendor of his holiness as they went out ahead of the army, singing: 'Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.' 22 As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 24 When the men of Judah came to the place overlooking the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. 25 So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment, clothing, and articles of value—more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. 26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the LORD. That is why it is called the Valley of Berakah to this day. 27 Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. 28 They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the LORD with harps, lyres, and trumpets. 29 The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side. 31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi. 32 Jehoshaphat followed the path of his father Asa and did not turn from it. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. 33 However, the high places were not removed, and the people still had not fully set their hearts on the God of their ancestors. 34 The rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end, are written in the records of Jehu son of Hanani, which were included in the Book of the Kings of Israel. 35 Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly. 36 He partnered with him to build ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37 But Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, 'Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy your works.' I am going to put a spirit in him so that when he hears a certain report, he will return to his own land, and there I will cause him to fall by the sword. 8 Then the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria waging war against Libnah, for he had heard that he had left Lachish. 9 Now the king of Assyria heard about Tirhakah, king of Cush, who was coming to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 "This is what you are to say to King Hezekiah of Judah: Do not let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria. 11 You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands by utterly destroying them. Will you be delivered? 12 Did the gods of the nations that my predecessors destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar—deliver them? 13 Where now is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena and Ivvah? 14 Hezekiah received the letters from the messengers, read them, and went up to the house of the LORD. There he spread them out before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD, saying: 16 "O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, who is enthroned above the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth. 17 Incline Your ear, LORD, and hear! Open Your eyes, LORD, and see! Listen to all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent them to mock the living God. 18 Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands. 19 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but the work of human hands—wood and stone. So they have destroyed them. 20 Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You, LORD, alone are God. 21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah, saying, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word the LORD has spoken against him: 'The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head as you flee. 23 Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! 24 Through your servants you have mocked the Lord. You have said, "With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost parts of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars and its choicest cypress trees. I have reached its remotest heights, the densest of its forests. 25 I dug wells and drank water; with the soles of my feet, I dried up all the rivers of Egypt. 26 Have you not heard? From long ago, I planned it; from ancient times, I designed it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins. 27 Their inhabitants, stripped of strength, were dismayed and put to shame. They were like grass in the field, tender green shoots, grass on the housetops, scorched before it grows up. 28 But I know your sitting down, your going out and coming in, and your raging against Me. 29 Because of your raging against Me and your arrogance that has reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way you came. 30 This will be the sign for you: This year you will eat what grows by itself, and in the second year, what springs from that. But in the third year, sow and reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 Once more, a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. 32 For a remnant will go out from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this. 33 Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with a shield or build a siege ramp against it. 34 By the way he came, he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD. 35 I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David. 36 Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies. 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp, departed, returned home, and stayed in Nineveh. 38 While he was worshiping in the house of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat. And his son Esarhaddon reigned in his place.
