    2One day, Eli was lying in his usual place. His eyesight had begun to grow dim, so he could not see well.

    3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.

    4Then the Lord called to Samuel, and he answered, "Here I am!"

    5Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So Samuel went and lay down again.

    6The Lord called Samuel again. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call, my son. Go back and lie down."

    7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

    8The Lord called Samuel a third time, and he got up and went to Eli, saying, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.

    9So Eli said to Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

    10The Lord came, stood there, and called as he had before: "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

    11The Lord said to Samuel, "Look, I am going to do something in Israel that will cause everyone who hears about it to tremble.

    14Therefore, I have sworn to the house of Eli that the guilt of his house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.

    15Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision.

    16But Eli called to Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." Samuel answered, "Here I am."

    17Eli asked, "What was it that he said to you? Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you severely if you hide from me anything he told you."

    18So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli said, "He is the Lord; let him do what he thinks is best."

    19Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, and he let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground.

    20All of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, recognized that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.

    21The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, for he revealed himself to Samuel there through his word.

    15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were fixed, so he could not see.

    16The man said to Eli, 'I have come from the battle; I fled from the battlefield today.' Eli asked, 'What happened, my son?'

    21And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

    22Now Eli was very old, and he heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
