Amnon was so distressed about his sister Tamar that he made himself sick, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.

Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man.

Jonadab asked him, 'Why are you, the king's son, so downcast morning after morning? Won't you tell me?' Amnon replied, 'I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.'

Jonadab said to him, 'Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, "Please let my sister Tamar come and prepare some food for me here in my sight, so I may watch her and eat it from her hand."'

Then she took the pan and placed the cakes before him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Send everyone out of here.' So everyone left him.

Then Amnon said to Tamar, 'Bring the food into my bedroom, so I may eat it from your hand.' Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in his bedroom.

But when she took them to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, 'Come, lie with me, my sister.'

She answered him, 'No, my brother! Don’t force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this outrageous thing.'
