    1After this, Absalom, son of David, had a beautiful sister named Tamar, and Amnon, the son of David, fell in love with her.

    2Amnon was so distressed about his sister Tamar that he made himself sick, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.

    3Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man.

    4Jonadab asked him, 'Why are you, the king's son, so downcast morning after morning? Won't you tell me?' Amnon replied, 'I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.'

    5Jonadab said to him, 'Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, "Please let my sister Tamar come and prepare some food for me here in my sight, so I may watch her and eat it from her hand."'

    6So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to him, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.'

    7David sent word to Tamar at the palace: 'Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare some food for him.'

    8So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the cakes in his sight, and baked them.

    9Then she took the pan and placed the cakes before him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Send everyone out of here.' So everyone left him.

    10Then Amnon said to Tamar, 'Bring the food into my bedroom, so I may eat it from your hand.' Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in his bedroom.

    11But when she took them to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, 'Come, lie with me, my sister.'

    12She answered him, 'No, my brother! Don’t force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this outrageous thing.'

    13What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And you would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not withhold me from you.

    14But he refused to listen to her, and being stronger than she, he forced her and lay with her.

    15Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, 'Get up and leave!'

    16But she said to him, 'No! Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me.' But he refused to listen to her.

    32But Jonadab, son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, 'Don’t think that all the king’s sons have been killed. Only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s intention ever since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.'

    33Now, my lord the king, don’t take to heart the report that says all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.

    34Meanwhile, Absalom fled. Now the watchman looked up and saw a large crowd coming down the hill on the road behind him.
