They came and stood before the king. 3 The king said to them, "I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to understand the dream." 4 Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, "O king, live forever! Tell the dream to your servants, and we will reveal its interpretation." 5 The king answered the Chaldeans, saying, "The command from me is firm: if you do not make the dream and its interpretation known to me, you will be torn limb from limb, and your houses will be turned into rubble. 6 But if you reveal the dream and its interpretation, you will receive gifts, rewards, and great honor from me. So declare the dream and its interpretation to me." 7 They answered again, saying, "Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will reveal its interpretation." 8 The king responded, "I am certain that you are trying to gain time because you see that my command is firm. 9 If you do not make the dream known to me, there is only one decree for you. You have agreed to speak false and corrupt words before me until the situation changes. Therefore, tell me the dream, so that I may know that you can reveal its interpretation." 10 The Chaldeans answered the king, saying, "There is no man on earth who can declare the king's matter. No great and powerful king has ever asked such a thing from any magician, enchanter, or Chaldean. 11 What the king is asking is too difficult, and no one can reveal it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals." 12 Because of this, the king became angry and extremely furious, and he commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. 13 The decree was issued, and the wise men were being put to death. They also sought Daniel and his companions to execute them. 14 Then Daniel responded with wisdom and discretion to Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to carry out the execution of the wise men of Babylon. 15 He asked Arioch, the king’s officer, "Why is the king’s decree so urgent?" Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. 16 So Daniel went in and requested the king to give him time, so that he might reveal the interpretation to the king. 17 Then Daniel went to his house and informed his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah about the matter. 18 He asked them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision during the night. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said, "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might belong to Him. 21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. 22 He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him. 23 To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for You have given me wisdom and might, and now You have made known to me what we asked of You, for You have made known to us the king’s matter. 24 Therefore, Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said to him, "Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me before the king, and I will reveal the interpretation to the king." 25 Then Arioch hurriedly brought Daniel before the king and said to him, "I have found a man from among the exiles of Judah who will reveal the interpretation to the king." 26 The king said to Daniel, who was also called Belteshazzar, "Are you able to make known to me the dream which I saw and its interpretation?" 27 Daniel answered the king, saying, "The mystery which the king asks about cannot be revealed by wise men, enchanters, magicians, or diviners. 28 However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the latter days. Your dream and the visions in your mind as you lay on your bed are as follows. 29 As for you, O king, your thoughts came into your mind while on your bed about what would happen in the future, and He who reveals mysteries has made known to you what is to come. 30 But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me because of any wisdom that I have more than anyone else, but so that the interpretation may be made known to the king and that you may understand the thoughts of your heart. 31 You, O king, were watching, and behold, a great image! This image, immense and of dazzling brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. 32 The head of this image was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze. 33 Its legs were made of iron, and its feet were part iron and part clay. 34 While you were watching, a stone was cut out, not by human hands. It struck the statue on its iron and clay feet and broke them into pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were all crushed together and became like chaff from a summer threshing floor. The wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. 36 This was the dream, and we will now tell the king its interpretation. 37 You, O king, are the king of kings, for the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory. 38 He has placed into your hands control over every person, animal, and bird that dwells under the heavens. Wherever they live, He has given you sovereignty over them all. You are the head of gold. 39 After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours; then a third kingdom, made of bronze, which will rule over the whole earth. 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, for iron crushes and shatters everything. And just as iron breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all the others. 41 But as you saw the feet and toes made partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom. However, it will have some of the strength of iron, as you saw the iron mixed with the clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw the iron mixed with clay, the people will mix but will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will establish a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will stand forever. 45 This is because you saw a stone cut out from a mountain without human hands, and it crushed the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God has made known to the king what will happen in the future. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is trustworthy. 46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that an offering and incense be presented to him. 47 The king spoke to Daniel, saying, "Truly, your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery." 48 Then the king made Daniel great, gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and chief over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 At Daniel's request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to manage the affairs of the province of Babylon, while Daniel remained in the king's court.
  • Dan 4:1-9 : 1 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace. 2 I had a dream that made me afraid; as I lay on my bed, the thoughts in my mind and the visions of my head terrified me. 3 I issued a decree to bring all the wise men of Babylon before me, so they could interpret my dream for me. 4 Then the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not explain its meaning to me. 5 Finally, Daniel came before me (whose name is Belteshazzar, named after my god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides), and I told him the dream. 6 O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no mystery is too difficult for you. Here are the visions of my dream that I saw; interpret them for me. 7 These were the visions I saw while lying on my bed: I looked, and there stood a tree in the middle of the earth, and its height was enormous. 8 The tree grew large and strong, its top reached the heavens, and it was visible to the ends of the earth. 9 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and it provided food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and every creature was fed from it. 10 In the visions I saw while lying on my bed, I looked, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven. 11 He called out loudly and said: ‘Cut down the tree and chop off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. 12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with iron and bronze, surrounded by the tender grass of the field. Let it be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let it live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 13 Let his mind be changed from that of a human, and let the mind of a beast be given to him, and let seven periods of time pass over him. 14 This decision is by the decree of the watchers and the sentence by the command of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men, and He gives them to whomever He will and sets the lowliest of men over them. 15 This is the dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, Belteshazzar, explain its meaning, because none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you are able because the spirit of the holy gods is in you. 16 Then Daniel, also called Belteshazzar, was stunned for a moment, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king spoke and said, 'Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream concern your enemies and its interpretation concern your adversaries!' 17 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which was visible to the whole earth, 18 whose foliage was beautiful and fruit abundant, providing food for all, under which the beasts of the field lived, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens nested— 19 you, O king, are that tree! You have grown great and strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your rule extends to the ends of the earth. 20 And you saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump with its roots bound with iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field. Let it be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let it live with the animals of the field until seven periods of time pass over it.’ 21 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High that has come upon my lord the king: 22 You will be driven away from people, and you will live with the wild animals. You will eat grass like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass over you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to whomever He chooses. 23 The command to leave the stump with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules. 24 Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: Break off your sins by pursuing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed. Perhaps there will be a lengthening of your prosperity. 25 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 26 At the end of twelve months, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 27 the king said, "Is not this the great Babylon which I have built as a royal residence by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?" 28 Even as the words were on the king's lips, a voice came from heaven: ‘O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: The kingdom has departed from you!' 29 You will be driven away from people, and your dwelling will be with the wild animals. You will eat grass like cattle, and seven times will pass over you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to whomever He pleases. 30 Immediately, what was spoken about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people, ate grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird. 31 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me. I praised the Most High, honored, and glorified Him who lives forever: His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation. 32 All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, 'What have You done?' 33 At the same time, my understanding returned to me. My honor and splendor were restored to me for the glory of my kingdom. My counselors and nobles sought me out, and I was reestablished in my kingdom, and even greater greatness was added to me. 34 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt, and glorify the King of Heaven, because all His works are true and His ways are just. He is able to humble those who walk in pride.

Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him even more for his dreams and his words. 9 Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers. He said, "Look, I had another dream, and this time the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." 10 When he told the dream to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, asking, "What kind of dream is this that you have had? Will I, your mother, and your brothers really come and bow down to the ground before you?" 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
  • Gen 40:1-9 : 1 After these events, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh became angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. 3 He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned Joseph to them, and he attended to them. After some time, they were kept in custody. 5 Both of them—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had its own meaning. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 7 He asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, 'Why do you look so downcast today?' 8 They said to him, 'We each had a dream, but there is no one to interpret it.' Joseph replied, 'Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.' 9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph. He said, 'In my dream, there was a vine in front of me. 10 And on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms came out, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.' 12 Then Joseph said to him, 'This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. 13 In three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you did when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when it goes well with you, please remember me and show me kindness. Mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this prison. 15 For I was forcibly taken from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in this pit. 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, 'I also had a dream. There were three baskets of white bread on my head. 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.' 18 Joseph answered, 'This is its interpretation: The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head—off of you—and hang you on a pole, and the birds will eat your flesh from you.' 20 On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he held a feast for all his servants. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his servants. 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he again placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand. 22 But he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 However, the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
