    20For it was the LORD's purpose to harden their hearts to engage in battle with Israel, so that they would be utterly destroyed, receiving no mercy, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

    21At that time Joshua came and destroyed the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, all the hill country of Judah, and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them and their cities to destruction.

    21When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city and that its smoke was rising, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai.

    22The others came out from the city to meet them, so the men of Ai were surrounded by the Israelites, some on one side and some on the other. They struck them down until no survivors or fugitives were left.
