6they would say, "Say 'Shibboleth.'" And if he said 'Sibboleth,' because he could not pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time, forty-two thousand from Ephraim were killed.
7Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in the towns of Gilead.
2Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they grew up, they drove Jephthah away, saying, 'You will have no inheritance in our father's house because you are the son of another woman.'
3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob. Men who were worthless gathered around Jephthah and went out with him.

9Jephthah answered, 'If you bring me back to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them to me, will I really become your head?'
10The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.'
11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their head and commander. Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, asking, 'What do you have against me that you have come to fight against my land?'
13The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, 'When Israel came out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and as far as the Jordan. Now return it peacefully.'
14Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites,
15Jephthah said to him, 'This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.'

11You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The leaders of Jericho, along with the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites fought against you, but I gave them into your hands.
2The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many people with you for me to hand Midian over to them, lest Israel boast against me, claiming, 'My own strength has delivered me.'
28He said to them, 'Follow me, for the Lord has given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hands.' So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.

13Gideon said to him, 'Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about, saying, ‘Did the Lord not bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.'
14The Lord turned to him and said, 'Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?'
9The Ammonites also crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was greatly distressed.
42But the LORD said to me, 'Tell them, "Do not go up or fight, because I am not with you; you will be defeated by your enemies."'

19Gideon said, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.'
