  • Acts 18:2-9 : 2 There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them. 3 Since they were of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked with them, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 Every Sabbath, he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade both Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. 6 But when they opposed him and spoke abusively, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, 'Your blood is on your own heads. I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.' 7 Then Paul left the synagogue and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, believed in the Lord together with his entire household. Many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized. 9 One night the Lord said to Paul in a vision, 'Do not be afraid, but keep on speaking and do not be silent.' 10 'For I am with you, and no one will attack or harm you, because I have many people in this city.' 11 So Paul stayed there for a year and six months, teaching them the word of God. 12 While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the judgment seat. 13 They said, 'This man persuades people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the law.' 14 But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, 'If this were a case of wrongdoing or a serious crime, Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear you out.' 15 'But if this is about questions of words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I do not wish to be a judge of such matters.' 16 And he drove them away from the judgment seat. 17 Then all the Greeks seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But Gallio showed no concern for any of this.
