Verse 5

I wish that all of you spoke in tongues, but I would rather you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless they interpret so that the church may be built up.

  • 1 Cor 14:18-40 : 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church, I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in regard to evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law it is written: 'By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,' says the Lord. 22 Thus, tongues are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign, not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if everyone is prophesying and an unbeliever or uninitiated person enters, they are convicted of sin by all and are examined by all. 25 The secrets of their heart are revealed, and they will fall facedown and worship God, exclaiming, 'God is truly among you!' 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be two or at most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep silent in the church and speak to themselves and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others evaluate what is said. 30 If something is revealed to another sitting there, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and be encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. 34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 If anyone considers themselves to be a prophet or spiritually gifted, let them acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are the Lord’s commands. 38 But if anyone ignores this, let them remain ignorant. 39 So then, brothers and sisters, eagerly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

  • 1 Cor 12:28-30 : 28 And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, guidance, and different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles?
