Verse 12

The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and I will also give it to your descendants after you.

So, I warned them on the day they were selling their provisions. 16 People from Tyre who lived there were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah and in Jerusalem. 17 I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this wicked thing you are doing—profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same, so that our God brought all this disaster upon us and upon this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath!" 19 When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and directed that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I stationed some of my men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Once or twice, the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 But I warned them and said, "Why are you spending the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will lay hands on you." From that time on, they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me also for this, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love. 23 Additionally, in those days I saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of other peoples, but they could not speak the language of Judah. 25 So I confronted them, cursed them, struck some of them, pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God: 'You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or yourselves.' 26 Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin because of such things? Among the many nations, there was no king like him; he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Yet, even he was led into sin by foreign women. 27 Must we then hear about you committing all this terrible evil, acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women? 28 Even one of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me. 29 Remember them, my God, for defiling the priesthood and breaking the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. 30 Thus I purified them from everything foreign and assigned duties to the priests and Levites, each to his task. 31 I also made provision for the wood offering at appointed times and for the firstfruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
