  • Jer 48:1-49:22 : 1 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says concerning Moab: Woe to Nebo, for it is devastated! Kiriathaim is disgraced and captured; the mighty stronghold is humbled and shattered. 2 The glory of Moab is no more! In Heshbon, a plan for disaster was made against her: 'Come, let us cut her off from being a nation!' Even Madmen will be silenced; the sword will follow you. 3 A cry of distress comes from Horonaim: great destruction and devastation! 4 Moab is broken! A cry is heard; even her young ones make their distress known. 5 For at the ascent of Luhith, weeping goes with the steps; as they descend to Horonaim, cries of destruction are heard from the enemy. 6 Flee! Save your lives like a juniper in the wilderness. 7 Because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you too will be captured! Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials together. 8 The destroyer will come to every city, and no city will escape. The valley will perish, and the plateau will be destroyed, for the LORD has spoken. 9 Give Moab wings so she may fly away, for her cities will become desolate, with no one living in them. 10 Cursed is the one who does the LORD's work negligently, and cursed is the one who withholds their sword from blood. 11 Moab has been at ease from her youth, settled on her dregs, not poured from vessel to vessel, nor gone into exile. Therefore her taste remains, and her aroma is unchanged. 12 Therefore, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will send those who pour out wine to tip her over; they will empty her vessels and shatter her jars. 13 Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence. 14 How can you say, 'We are warriors, men mighty in battle'? 15 Moab is devastated, and its towns have been destroyed! The best of its young men have gone down to slaughter, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts. 16 The calamity of Moab is near at hand, and her disaster is rushing swiftly. 17 Mourn for her, all you who surround her, and all who know her name; say, 'How the mighty rod of strength and the glorious staff is broken!' 18 Come down from your place of glory and sit in thirst, inhabitant daughter of Dibon, for the one who destroys Moab has attacked you, ruining your fortresses. 19 Stand by the road and watch, inhabitant of Aroer. Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, 'What has happened?' 20 Moab is put to shame, for it is shattered. Wail and cry out! Proclaim at the Arnon that Moab is destroyed. 21 Judgment has come to the land of the plain—to Holon, to Jahaz, and to Mephaath, 22 to Dibon, to Nebo, and to Beth-diblathaim, 23 to Kiriathaim, to Beth-gamul, and to Beth-meon, 24 to Kerioth, to Bozrah, and to all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and her arm is broken, declares the LORD. 26 Make her drunk, for she has magnified herself against the LORD. Moab will wallow in her vomit and become an object of ridicule. 27 Was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he found among thieves, that whenever you speak of him you wag your head in scorn? 28 Abandon your cities and dwell among the rocks, O inhabitants of Moab. Be like a dove that makes its nest in the sides of the cave's opening. 29 We have heard of Moab's pride—so very proud—his arrogance, pride, conceit, and the haughtiness of his heart. 30 I know his fury, declares the LORD, but it is empty; his boasts accomplish nothing. 31 Therefore, I will wail for Moab; I will cry out for all of Moab. For the men of Kir-heres, I will mourn. 32 I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah, more than for Jazer. Your branches spread to the sea, reaching as far as Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruit and your grape harvest. 33 Joy and gladness have been taken from the fertile fields and the land of Moab. I have stopped the wine flowing from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy. There is no joyful shouting. 34 The crying of Heshbon resounds to Elealeh and Jahaz, they have raised their voices from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up. 35 I will put an end in Moab to the one who sacrifices on the high places and burns incense to his gods, declares the LORD. 36 Therefore, my heart moans for Moab like the sound of flutes; it moans like flutes for the men of Kir-heres, because their accumulated wealth has perished. 37 Every head is shaved, every beard is cut off, gashes are on all their hands, and sackcloth is wrapped around their waists. 38 On every rooftop of Moab and in its public squares, there is nothing but lamentation. For I have broken Moab like a jar no one wants, declares the LORD. 39 How shattered Moab is! Cry out! How Moab has turned his back in shame. So Moab will become a ridicule and a horror to all his neighbors. 40 For this is what the LORD says: Behold, one will fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Moab. 41 The cities are captured, and the strongholds are seized. On that day, the heart of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor. 42 Moab will be destroyed as a people, because he exalted himself against the LORD. 43 Terror, pit, and snare await you, O inhabitant of Moab, declares the LORD. 44 The one who flees from the terror will fall into the pit, and the one climbing out of the pit will be caught in the snare. For I will bring on Moab the year of their punishment, declares the LORD. 45 In the shadow of Heshbon, the fugitives stand helpless, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, and a flame from Sihon. It devours the corner of Moab and the crown of the noisy boasters. 46 Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are destroyed. Your sons have been taken into exile, and your daughters into captivity. 47 Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab. 1 Concerning the children of Ammon, this is what the LORD says: Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has their king taken possession of Gad, and why do his people dwell in its cities? 2 Therefore, behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate heap, and its villages will be burned with fire. Then Israel will take possession of those who dispossessed him, declares the LORD. 3 Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn. Wander around by the fences, for their king will go into exile, along with his priests and officials together. 4 Why do you boast of your valleys, your abundant valley, O rebellious daughter? You trust in your treasures and say, 'Who will come against me?' 5 Behold, I am bringing terror upon you from all around you, declares the Lord, the LORD of Hosts. You will be driven away, each man fleeing before him, with no one to gather the fugitives. 6 But afterward, I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the LORD. 7 Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom become corrupted? 8 Flee! Turn back! Hide deep in the caves, O inhabitants of Dedan, for I will bring calamity upon Esau at the time of my punishment. 9 If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave a few gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not steal only what they needed? 10 But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot hide. His descendants, brothers, and neighbors are destroyed, and he is no more. 11 Leave your orphans; I will preserve their lives. Let your widows trust in me. 12 For this is what the LORD says: If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but you must certainly drink it. 13 For by myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that Bozrah will become a horror, a disgrace, a waste, and a curse. All her cities will become perpetual ruins. 14 I have heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: 'Assemble yourselves and come against her; rise up for battle.' 15 Look, I have made you small among the nations, despised among mankind. 16 The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, holding the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle, from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD. 17 Edom will become a desolation; everyone who passes by her will be appalled and hiss because of all her wounds. 18 As with the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, says the LORD, no one will live there; no human being will stay in it. 19 Look, like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan to a permanent pasture, I will suddenly chase Edom from its land, and I will appoint over it whomever I choose. For who is like me, and who can summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore, hear the counsel of the LORD that he has planned against Edom, and his purposes that he has devised against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the little ones of the flock will be dragged away; he will make their pasture desolate because of them. 21 At the sound of their downfall, the earth will tremble; their cry will be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, an eagle will come up and swoop down, spreading its wings over Bozrah. On that day, the hearts of Edom's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
  • Ps 137:7 : 7 Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem, when they said, 'Tear it down! Tear it down to its very foundations!'
  • Isa 15:1-9 : 1 An oracle concerning Moab: In the night, Ar of Moab was devastated and destroyed. In the night, Kir of Moab was devastated and destroyed. 2 They have gone up to the temple and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba. Every head is shaved, and every beard is cut off. 3 In its streets, they wear sackcloth. On its rooftops and public squares, everyone wails, falling down in tears. 4 Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore, the armed men of Moab cry out, and their souls are filled with dread. 5 My heart cries out for Moab; her fugitives flee to Zoar, like a three-year-old heifer. They go up weeping by the ascent of Luhith. On the way to Horonaim, they raise a cry of destruction. 6 The waters of Nimrim are desolate. The grass is withered, the vegetation has vanished, and nothing green remains. 7 So the wealth they have earned and their stored possessions will be carried away over the Wadi of the Willows. 8 For the cry has gone around the borders of Moab. Its wailing reaches Eglaim, and its lamentation goes all the way to Beer Elim. 9 The waters of Dimon are full of blood, and I will bring even more upon Dimon—a lion upon the survivors of Moab and upon those remaining in the land.
  • Isa 25:10 : 10 For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain, but Moab will be trampled under him as straw is trampled down in a manure pit.
  • Isa 34:1-9 : 1 Come near, O nations, to listen; and pay attention, O peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that fills it, the world and all its inhabitants. 2 For the Lord is angry with all nations, and His wrath is against all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them, He has handed them over to slaughter. 3 Their slain will be thrown out, and the stench of their corpses will rise; the mountains will be dissolved with their blood. 4 All the stars of the heavens will rot away, and the skies will be rolled up like a scroll. All their armies will wither, as a leaf withers on the vine or a fig shrivels and falls from the fig tree. 5 For My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens. Behold, it will descend upon Edom, upon the people of My judgment, to bring justice. 6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood; it is fat with the fat of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom. 7 And wild oxen will fall with them, and young bulls with strong ones. Their land will drink its fill of blood, and their soil will be enriched with fat. 8 For it is the day of the Lord's vengeance, the year of recompense for the cause of Zion. 9 And its streams will be turned to pitch, its soil to sulfur; its land will become burning pitch. 10 It will not be quenched night or day; its smoke will rise forever. From generation to generation, it will lie desolate; no one will ever pass through it again. 11 The pelican and the hedgehog will possess it, the owl and the raven will dwell there. He will stretch over it a measuring line of chaos and stones of emptiness. 12 Its nobles will have no one there to call them a kingdom, and all its princes will come to nothing. 13 Thorns will grow in its palaces, nettles and brambles in its fortresses. It will become a dwelling place for jackals, a home for ostriches. 14 Wild beasts will meet with hyenas, and satyrs will call to one another. There, the night creature will settle and find her place of rest. 15 There, the arrow snake will make her nest, lay eggs, hatch them, and care for her young in her shadow. Indeed, there the kites will gather, each one with its mate. 16 Search and consult the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these will be missing; none will lack its mate. For His mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them together. 17 He has cast the lot for them, and His hand has divided it among them with the measuring line. They will possess it forever; from generation to generation, they will dwell there.
  • Isa 63:1-6 : 1 Who is this coming from Edom, with garments stained red from Bozrah? This one, splendid in his clothing, striding forward in the greatness of his strength. "It is I, proclaiming righteousness, mighty to save." 2 Why are your clothes red, and your garments like those of someone who treads in a winepress? 3 "I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the nations, no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and crushed them in my wrath; their lifeblood splattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing." 4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption had come. 5 I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that no one gave support. So my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath sustained me. 6 I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath, I made them drunk and poured their lifeblood onto the ground.

  • Lam 4:21-22 : 21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz! But to you also the cup will pass; you will become drunk and strip yourself naked. 22 The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished; He will keep you in exile no longer. But He will punish your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins.
  • Ezek 25:2-9 : 2 Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites and prophesy against them. 3 Say to the Ammonites: Hear the word of the Sovereign LORD! This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you said, 'Aha!' against my sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile, 4 therefore, I am handing you over to the people of the east as a possession. They will set up their camps among you and pitch their tents around you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk. 5 I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and the land of the Ammonites a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the LORD. 6 For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you clapped your hands, stomped your feet, and rejoiced with all the scorn in your heart against the land of Israel, 7 therefore, I will stretch out my hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples, destroy you from the lands, and annihilate you. Then you will know that I am the LORD. 8 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because Moab and Seir said, 'Look! The house of Judah is like all the other nations,' 9 therefore, I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning with its frontier cities—the pride of the land—Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim. 10 I will hand it over, along with the Ammonites, to the people of the east as a possession, so that the Ammonites will no longer be remembered among the nations. 11 I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the LORD. 12 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because Edom acted in revenge against the house of Judah and committed great guilt by taking vengeance on them, 13 Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off both man and beast from it. I will make it a wasteland from Teman to Dedan, and they will fall by the sword. 14 I will take my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to my anger and my wrath. Then they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign LORD.

  • Ezek 35:1-9 : 1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: 2 Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it. 3 Say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate wasteland.' 4 I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD. 5 Because you have harbored eternal hostility and delivered the Israelites to the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will make you a land of bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7 I will turn Mount Seir into a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go. 8 I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines. 9 I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD. 10 Because you said, 'These two nations and countries will be ours, and we will take possession of them,' even though the LORD was there, 11 therefore, as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will deal with you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred against them, and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. 12 Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard all the contemptuous things you said against the mountains of Israel. You said, 'They have been laid waste and given over to us to devour.' 13 You boasted against me with your mouth and multiplied your words against me. I have heard it. 14 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel when it became desolate, so will I deal with you. You will become a desolation, Mount Seir, along with all of Edom—all of it. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
  • Amos 1:11-2:3 : 11 Thus says the LORD: 'For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and suppressed compassion. His anger tore continually, and his wrath remained forever.' 12 So I will send fire upon Teman, and it will consume the palaces of Bozrah. 13 Thus says the LORD: 'For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke punishment, because they ripped open pregnant women in Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.' 14 So I will set fire to the wall of Rabbah, and it will consume her palaces amid shouting on the day of battle, with a tempest on the day of the whirlwind. 15 Their king will go into exile, he and his princes together,' says the LORD. 1 This is what the LORD says: 'For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they burned to lime the bones of the king of Edom.' 2 'So I will send fire upon Moab, and it will consume the fortresses of Kerioth. Moab will die in great tumult, with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.' 3 'I will cut off the ruler from its midst and kill all its officials with him,' declares the LORD.
  • Obad 1:1-9 : 1 This is the vision of Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says concerning Edom—We have heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: "Rise up, and let us rise against her for battle." 2 Behold, I have made you small among the nations; you are utterly despised. 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; you say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to the ground?" 4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD. 5 If thieves came to you, if robbers came by night—oh, how you would be ruined!—would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings? 6 How Esau has been pillaged; his hidden treasures sought out! 7 All your allies have driven you to your border; those at peace with you have deceived you; they have prevailed against you. Those who eat your bread have set a trap under you—there is no understanding in him. 8 Will I not, on that day, declares the LORD, destroy the wise men from Edom and understanding from the mountain of Esau? 9 Your warriors, O Teman, will be terrified, so that everyone from the mountain of Esau will be cut off by slaughter. 10 Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever. 11 On the day you stood aloof, on the day strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them. 12 But do not gloat over your brother on the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah on the day of their destruction; and do not boastfully speak on the day of distress. 13 Do not enter the gate of my people on the day of their disaster; do not gloat over their calamity on the day of their disaster; and do not reach out your hand to their wealth on the day of their disaster. 14 Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors on the day of distress. 15 For the day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. 16 Just as you drank on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been.
  • Obad 1:18 : 18 The house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; the house of Esau will be stubble. They will set it on fire and consume it. There will be no survivors from the house of Esau, for the LORD has spoken.
  • Zeph 2:8-9 : 8 I have heard the taunts of Moab and the insults of the Ammonites, who have reproached My people and enlarged their borders. 9 Therefore, as surely as I live—declares the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel—Moab will become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land of weeds and salt pits, a perpetual ruin. The remnant of My people will plunder them, and the survivors of My nation will inherit their land. 10 This will be their lot in return for their pride, because they have taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of Hosts.
  • Mal 1:2-4 : 2 I have loved you, says the LORD. But you ask, 'How have you loved us?' Wasn't Esau Jacob's brother? declares the LORD. Yet I have loved Jacob, 3 but Esau I have hated. I have turned his mountains into a wasteland and given his inheritance to the wild creatures of the desert. 4 Though Edom may say, 'We have been destroyed, but we will rebuild the ruins,' this is what the LORD of Hosts says: They may rebuild, but I will tear it down. They will be called 'The Wicked Land,' and 'The people the LORD is angry with forever.'
