He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing. 8 So we passed by our relatives, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and we turned from the road through the Arabah, bypassing Elath and Ezion-geber. Then we moved on and journeyed along the wilderness road of Moab. 9 The LORD said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land as a possession. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.' 10 The Emim used to live there, a people great and numerous and as tall as the Anakites. 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaim, though the Moabites call them Emim. 12 The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them. They destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the LORD gave them as their possession. 13 Now rise up and cross over the Zered Valley.' So we crossed over the Zered Valley. 14 The time we traveled from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. 15 Indeed, the LORD's hand was against them, eliminating them from within the camp until they were all destroyed. 16 When all the fighting men among the people had died and were gone, 17 the LORD spoke to me, saying, 18 'Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar. 19 When you come near the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to conflict, for I will not give you any land of the Ammonites as a possession because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.' 20 (This land is considered the land of the Rephaim; the Rephaim lived there formerly, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim. 21 They were a great and numerous people, as tall as the Anakites. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23 And as for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place. 24 'Rise up, set out, and cross over the Arnon Valley.
