David instructed the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as singers, to sing joyful songs accompanied by musical instruments—harps, lyres, and cymbals.
So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel, Asaph son of Berechiah from his relatives, and Ethan son of Kushaiah from the descendants of Merari, their brothers.
With them were their second-rank colleagues: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, who served as gatekeepers.
The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan played bronze cymbals to sound the music.
Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah played the harps according to Alamoth.
Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah played the lyres to direct with Sheminith.
