Elisha said to him, "Go and say to him, 'You will certainly recover,' but the LORD has shown me that he will surely die."
Elisha fixed his gaze on him and stared until Hazael was embarrassed. Then the man of God began to weep.
Hazael asked, "Why is my lord weeping?" Elisha answered, "Because I know the harm you will do to the people of Israel. You will set their fortresses on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, you will dash their little ones to pieces, and you will rip open their pregnant women."
Hazael said, "How could your servant, a mere dog, accomplish such a great thing?" Elisha answered, "The LORD has shown me that you will become king over Aram."
Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master, who asked him, "What did Elisha say to you?" Hazael replied, "He told me that you will certainly recover."
But the next day, Hazael took a thick cloth, soaked it in water, and spread it over the king's face until he died. Then Hazael became king in his place.
