5Then Ezra arose and made the leaders of the priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said. So they took the oath.

3So now, let us make a covenant with our God to send away all these women and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and those who tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done in accordance with the Law.
14Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, gather to us there. Our God will fight for us.
15We continued the work, with half of the men holding spears, from the break of dawn until the stars came out.
9So, within three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month, and all the people sat in the square before the house of God, trembling because of the matter and because of the heavy rain.
10Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel's guilt.
11Now make confession to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women.
12The whole assembly responded with a loud voice, "You are right! We must do as you say.
13But there are many people here, and it is the rainy season, so we cannot stand outside. This matter cannot be resolved in a day or two because we have sinned greatly in this matter.
14Let our leaders act on behalf of the entire assembly. Then let all those in our towns who have married foreign women come at appointed times, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God regarding this matter is turned away from us.
2they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the families and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, who brought us here."
3But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel said to them, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, king of Persia, has commanded us."
4But now, be strong, Zerubbabel—this is the declaration of the LORD. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land—this is the declaration of the LORD. Work, for I am with you—this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts.
13I issue a decree that any willing person from the people of Israel, including the priests and Levites in my kingdom, may go with you to Jerusalem.
18I told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, "Let us arise and build!" So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
10For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, to observe it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.
11This is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, a scribe skilled in the commandments of the Lord and His statutes for Israel:
20And whatever else may be needed for the house of your God that it falls upon you to provide, you may do so from the royal treasury.
21And I, King Artaxerxes, hereby issue a command to all the treasurers of the region beyond the river: Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, may request of you, it must be done promptly,
12Be strong, and let us show strength for the sake of our people and the cities of our God. May the LORD do what seems good to Him.
25And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, are to appoint judges and magistrates who can judge all the people in the region beyond the River—all those who know the laws of your God. And for anyone who does not know them, you shall teach them.
26Anyone who does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king shall face judgment promptly, whether it be death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment.
20I answered them, saying, "The God of heaven will give us success. We, his servants, will arise and build. But as for you, you have no share, no legal claim or historic right in Jerusalem."
16So the exiles did as proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of families, each identified by name, to investigate the matter; they convened on the first day of the tenth month to begin their investigation.
22Be diligent in carrying out this command, so that no damage may increase and harm the interests of the kings.
5Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites—everyone whose spirit God had stirred—rose to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
13Be strong, and let us show courage for the sake of our people and the cities of our God. And may the LORD do what is good in His sight.
5Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people because he was standing above them. As he opened it, all the people stood up.
11Behold, Amariah the chief priest will be over you in matters of the LORD, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader over the tribe of Judah, will be responsible for kingly affairs. The Levites will serve as officials before you. Act courageously, and may the LORD be with those who do right.
28And who has shown favor to me before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. I was strengthened because the hand of the Lord my God was upon me, and I gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me.
9For they were all trying to intimidate us, saying, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But now, strengthen my hands!
16Gold, silver, bronze, and iron are beyond measure. Arise and begin the work, and may the Lord be with you.
22For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies along the way, since we had told the king, 'The hand of our God is favorable toward all who seek Him, but His power and wrath are against all who abandon Him.'
17But you, prepare yourself; rise and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.
27Must we then hear about you committing all this terrible evil, acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?
8'Let it be known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God. It is being rebuilt with large stones and timber is being placed in the walls. The work is being done diligently and is progressing well in their hands.'
9'Then we asked those elders, and we said to them, "Who gave you the authority to rebuild this temple and complete this structure?"'
14If you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows? Perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.
4They also asked, 'What are the names of the men who are constructing this building?'
7Leave the work on this house of God alone. Let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews rebuild this house of God on its original site.
6this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he had requested because the hand of the Lord his God was upon him.
7A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem.
18And whatever seems best to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God.
10Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger may turn away from us.
9'Though we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our slavery. He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia. He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and He has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.'
