The capital was three cubits high. It was decorated with a network of pomegranates all around, all made of bronze. The second pillar had the same design, including the network. 18 The captain of the guard arrested Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the deputy priest, and the three keepers of the threshold. 19 From the city, he took a court official who was in charge of the men of war, five men from those who advised the king, the secretary of the commander of the army who was responsible for conscripting the people of the land, and sixty men from the people of the land found in the city. 20 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21 The king of Babylon struck them down and executed them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah went into exile away from its land. 22 As for the people who were left in the land of Judah, whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had left, he appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them. 23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite—and they and their men. 24 Gedaliah swore an oath to reassure them and their men: 'Do not be afraid of the Chaldean officials. Settle in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well for you.' 25 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of royal descent, came with ten men and struck down Gedaliah. They also killed the Jews and the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. 26 Then all the people, from the youngest to the oldest, together with the army commanders, arose and fled to Egypt because they were afraid of the Chaldeans. 27 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, Evil-merodach, king of Babylon, in the year he began to reign, released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison.
