It was hollow, its walls were four fingers thick, and a measuring cord twelve cubits long could encircle it. 22 The bronze capital on each pillar was five cubits high, decorated with a lattice of bronze network and pomegranates all around. Both pillars were the same, including the pomegranates. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides, and the total number of pomegranates on the lattice surrounding them was a hundred. 24 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the deputy priest, and the three doorkeepers. 25 From the city, he took one court official who was in charge of the men of war, seven men of those who had personal access to the king and were found in the city, the scribe of the commander who mustered the people of the land, and sixty men of the people who were found within the city. 26 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27 The king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. The second pillar had the same design, including the network. 18 The captain of the guard arrested Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the deputy priest, and the three keepers of the threshold. 19 From the city, he took a court official who was in charge of the men of war, five men from those who advised the king, the secretary of the commander of the army who was responsible for conscripting the people of the land, and sixty men from the people of the land found in the city. 20 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 21 The king of Babylon struck them down and executed them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. Settle in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well for you.' 25 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of royal descent, came with ten men and struck down Gedaliah. They also killed the Jews and the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. 26 Then all the people, from the youngest to the oldest, together with the army commanders, arose and fled to Egypt because they were afraid of the Chaldeans. 27 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, Evil-merodach, king of Babylon, in the year he began to reign, released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. 28 He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. 29 Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes and ate regularly at the king's table for the rest of his life. 30 His daily portion was provided by the king, a regular allowance given for each day, all the days of his life.

They defiled the house of the LORD, which He had sanctified in Jerusalem. 15 The LORD, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them repeatedly through His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and His dwelling place. 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against His people beyond remedy. 17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in their sanctuary and showed no mercy to young men, young women, the elderly, or the infirm; God delivered them all into his hand. 18 He carried away all the articles of the house of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the LORD’s house, as well as the treasures of the king and of his officials. He brought them all to Babylon. 19 They burned the house of God, tore down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, destroying all its valuable articles. 20 He exiled to Babylon the remnant who survived the sword, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power. 21 This happened to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. All the time of its desolation it rested, to fulfill seventy years.
• Jer 21:1-9 : 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur son of Malkijah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to him, saying, 2 Inquire, please, of the LORD on our behalf, since Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is fighting against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, so that he may withdraw from us. 3 But Jeremiah said to them, "This is what you shall say to Zedekiah: 4 "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Behold, I am turning back the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. I will gather them into the midst of this city. 5 And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand, a strong arm, in anger, in fury, and with great wrath. 6 I will strike the inhabitants of this city—both man and beast—with a great plague, and they will die. 7 Afterward, declares the LORD, I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, the people, and those remaining in this city from the plague, the sword, and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their lives. He will strike them down with the edge of the sword without pity, without sparing, and without mercy. 8 Now you shall also say to this people: "Thus says the LORD: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 Whoever remains in this city will die by the sword, famine, and plague. But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live; they shall save their life as a prize. 10 For I have set my face against this city for disaster and not for good, declares the LORD. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will burn it with fire. 11 To the house of the king of Judah: Hear the word of the LORD. 12 House of David, this is what the LORD says: Execute justice in the morning and rescue the one who is robbed from the hand of the oppressor, or my wrath will go out like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it, because of the evil of your deeds. 13 Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the plain, declares the LORD. You who say, 'Who can come against us? Who can enter our dwellings?' 14 I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds, declares the LORD. I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will consume everything around her.

Then I will relent concerning the disaster that I plan to bring on them because of the evil they have done. 4 And you shall say to them, 'The LORD says: If you do not listen to Me and follow My law which I have set before you... 5 ...and listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have persistently sent to you (though you have not listened), 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing among all the nations on earth.' 7 And the priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8 And when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, 'You shall surely die!' 9 'Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, “This house will become like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitants”?' And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD's house. 10 When the officials of Judah heard these things, they went up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and sat at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, 'This man deserves the death sentence, for he has prophesied against this city as you have heard with your own ears.' 12 But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, 'The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.' 13 'Now, therefore, amend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent concerning the disaster that He has pronounced against you.' 14 'But as for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right in your eyes.' 15 But you should certainly know that if you put me to death, you are bringing innocent blood upon yourselves, this city, and its inhabitants, for truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing. 16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and prophets, 'This man does not deserve the death penalty, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.' 17 And some of the elders of the land stood up and spoke to the whole assembly of the people, saying: 18 'Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah, “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the temple mount will become overgrown with thickets.”' 19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and plead for His favor? And the LORD relented concerning the disaster that He pronounced against them. But we are about to bring a terrible disaster upon ourselves! 20 Now there was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and this land in words exactly like those of Jeremiah. 21 When King Jehoiakim, all his mighty men, and all the officials heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it, and he was afraid, so he fled and went to Egypt. 22 Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and some others went with him. 23 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with the sword and threw his body into the burial place of the common people. 24 Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
• Jer 28:1-9 : 1 In the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying: 2 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.' 3 Within two years, I will bring back to this place all the articles of the LORD's house that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took from here and carried to Babylon. 4 I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, along with all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,' declares the LORD, 'for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.' 5 Then the prophet Jeremiah responded to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people standing in the house of the LORD. 6 The prophet Jeremiah said, 'Amen! May the LORD do so! May the LORD fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing back the articles of the LORD's house and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.' 7 Nevertheless, listen now to this word I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: 8 The prophets who came before me and you from ancient times prophesied against many nations and great kingdoms of war, disaster, and plague. 9 But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the LORD only if his word comes to pass. 10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. 11 And Hananiah declared in the presence of all the people, saying, 'This is what the LORD says: Within two years, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, from the necks of all the nations.' At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way. 12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: 13 Go and tell Hananiah, saying, 'This is what the LORD says: You have broken wooden yokes, but in their place you have made iron yokes.' 14 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have placed an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations, to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him control over the beasts of the field.' 15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, 'Listen now, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, but you have led this people to trust in falsehood.' 16 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.' 17 And the prophet Hananiah died that same year, in the seventh month.
• Jer 34:1-35:19 : 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord when Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and all his army, along with all the kingdoms under his dominion and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities, saying: 2 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell Zedekiah, king of Judah, 'This is what the Lord says: I am delivering this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.' 3 And you will not escape from his hand, for you will surely be captured and handed over to him. Your eyes will see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he will speak directly to you. You will go to Babylon. 4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah, king of Judah! This is what the Lord says concerning you: You will not die by the sword. 5 You will die in peace, and as burnings were made for your ancestors, the former kings who were before you, so they will burn incense for you and lament for you, saying, 'Alas, lord!' For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord. 6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah, king of Judah, in Jerusalem. 7 At that time, the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the remaining fortified cities of Judah—Lachish and Azekah. These were the only fortified cities left in Judah. 8 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them: 9 Each was to free his Hebrew servants, both male and female, so that no one would enslave a fellow Hebrew, a fellow Jew. 10 And all the officials and all the people who entered into the covenant agreed to set free their male and female slaves, so that they would no longer enslave them. They obeyed and set them free. 11 But afterward they turned back and took back the men and women they had freed, and forced them to become slaves again. 12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: 13 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying: 14 At the end of seven years, each of you must set free your Hebrew brothers who have been sold to you and have served you for six years. You must release them to go free. But your ancestors did not obey me or pay attention to me. 15 Recently, you repented and did what is right in my sight by proclaiming freedom, each man for his neighbor. You made a covenant before me in the house where my name is called upon. 16 But then you turned back and profaned my name. You took back the servants and maidservants whom you had set free, allowing them to go wherever they desired, and you brought them back into subjection to become your slaves again. 17 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming freedom, each one to his brother and to his neighbor. So now, I proclaim freedom for you, declares the Lord—freedom to the sword, to plague, and to famine. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 The men who violated my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and walked between its pieces. 19 The officials of Judah, the officials of Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf— 20 I will hand them over to their enemies and to those who seek their lives. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth. 21 And I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon that has withdrawn from you. 22 Behold, I am giving a command, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, capture it, and burn it with fire. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without any inhabitants. 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD during the days of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: 2 Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, bring them into the house of the LORD, to one of the chambers, and offer them wine to drink. 3 So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah, his brothers, all his sons, and the entire house of the Rechabites. 4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was near the chamber of the officials, above the chamber of Maaseiah, son of Shallum, the gatekeeper. 5 Then I set bowls full of wine and cups before the sons of the house of the Rechabites and said to them, 'Drink wine.' 6 But they said, 'We will not drink wine, for Jonadab, son of Rechab, our ancestor, commanded us, saying: “You and your descendants must never drink wine.”' 7 'You must not build houses, sow seed, plant vineyards, or own any of these things, but instead, live in tents all your days so that you may live long in the land where you sojourn.' 8 We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, son of Rechab, our ancestor, in everything he instructed us, so that we do not drink wine all our days—we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters. 9 We do not build houses to live in, or own vineyards, fields, or seed. 10 But we live in tents, and we have obeyed and done everything that Jonadab, our ancestor, commanded us. 11 However, when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up against the land, we said, 'Come, let us go to Jerusalem to escape the army of the Chaldeans and the army of Aram.' So we have lived in Jerusalem. 12 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: 13 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: “Will you not accept instruction and obey My words?” declares the LORD. 14 The words of Jonadab, son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons not to drink wine, have been upheld to this day. They have obeyed their ancestor's command. But I have spoken to you persistently, and you have not listened to Me. 15 I sent all My servants the prophets to you persistently, saying: 'Turn now, each one of you, from your evil ways and correct your deeds. Do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you shall dwell in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.' But you did not incline your ear or listen to Me. 16 Surely the sons of Jonadab, son of Rechab, have kept the command their ancestor gave them, but these people have not listened to Me. 17 Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster I have spoken against them because I spoke to them, but they did not listen; I called to them, but they did not answer.' 18 But to the house of the Rechabites, Jeremiah said: 'This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab, your ancestor, and have kept all his instructions and done all that he commanded you,”' 19 Therefore, this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'Jonadab, son of Rechab, will never lack a man to stand before Me all the days.'
• Jer 37:1-9 : 1 King Zedekiah son of Josiah became king in place of Coniah son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed to rule over the land of Judah. 2 Neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD, which He spoke through the prophet Jeremiah. 3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophet Jeremiah with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us." 4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put into prison. 5 Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from the city. 6 Then the word of the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah: 7 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: You are to tell this to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of me: 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to help you, will return to its own land, to Egypt.' 8 'Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city; they will capture it and burn it with fire.' 9 This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Chaldeans will surely leave us,' for they will not leave. 10 Even if you were to strike down the entire Chaldean army fighting against you, and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would rise up and burn this city with fire. 11 When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his share of property among the people. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, a captain of the guard named Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, was there. He arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!" 14 Jeremiah replied, "That is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him. Instead, he seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 The officials were furious with Jeremiah, and they beat him and put him in prison, in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which had been made into a prison. 16 When Jeremiah was put into the dungeon and the cells, he remained there for many days. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent for him and secretly questioned him in his palace, saying, "Is there any word from the LORD?" Jeremiah replied, "There is. You will be handed over to the king of Babylon." 18 Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you, your officials, or this people, to justify putting me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land'? 20 Now please hear me, my lord the king. Let my plea come before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there. 21 So King Zedekiah commanded that Jeremiah be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the bakers' street until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
