2And he prayed to the LORD, saying, 'O LORD, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own land? That is why I tried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from sending calamity.
4But the LORD said, 'Is it right for you to be angry?'
5Jonah then went out of the city and sat east of it. There he made himself a shelter and sat under its shade, waiting to see what would happen to the city.
6Then the LORD God appointed a plant, and it grew up over Jonah to provide shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant.
7But at dawn the next day, God appointed a worm, which attacked the plant so that it withered.
8When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wished to die and said, 'It is better for me to die than to live.'
9But God said to Jonah, 'Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?' And Jonah replied, 'It is right for me to be angry, even to the point of death.'
10But the LORD said, 'You cared about the plant, which you did not labor for or make grow; it appeared in the night and perished in the night.
11So should I not care about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?'
32The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's preaching—and look, something greater than Jonah is here.
