28But the king of the Ammonites would not listen to the message Jephthah sent to him.
29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and he went on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.
30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: 'If you give the Ammonites into my hands,

9Jephthah answered, 'If you bring me back to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them to me, will I really become your head?'
10The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.'
11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their head and commander. Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
17The Ammonites were called together and encamped in Gilead, while the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
18The people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, 'Who is the man who will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He shall be the leader for all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
9The Ammonites also crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was greatly distressed.

37But as for the land of the Ammonites, you did not go near it, nor to the banks of the Jabbok River, nor to the cities of the hill country, nor to anything else the LORD our God had instructed us not to touch.
23Now the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites before His people Israel. Would you now take possession of it?
