When your father comes to see you, say to him, "Please let my sister Tamar come and prepare some food for me here in my sight, so I may watch her and eat it from her hand."' 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to him, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.' 7 David sent word to Tamar at the palace: 'Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare some food for him.' 8 So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the cakes in his sight, and baked them. 9 Then she took the pan and placed the cakes before him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Send everyone out of here.' So everyone left him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, 'Bring the food into my bedroom, so I may eat it from your hand.' Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. 11 But when she took them to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, 'Come, lie with me, my sister.' 12 She answered him, 'No, my brother! Don’t force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this outrageous thing.' 13 What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And you would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not withhold me from you. 14 But he refused to listen to her, and being stronger than she, he forced her and lay with her. 15 Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, 'Get up and leave!' 16 But she said to him, 'No! Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me.' But he refused to listen to her. 17 He called his servant who attended him and said, 'Throw this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.' 18 Now she was wearing a richly ornamented robe, for this was how the virgin daughters of the king dressed in those days. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. 19 Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornamented robe she was wearing. She put her hand on her head and went away, weeping loudly as she went. 20 Her brother Absalom said to her, 'Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.' And Tamar lived in her brother Absalom's house, desolate. 21 When King David heard all of this, he was furious. 22 Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad; he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar. 23 Two years later, when Absalom's sheep were being sheared at Baal Hazor near Ephraim, he invited all the king’s sons to come. 24 Absalom went to the king and said, 'Your servant has shearers. Will the king and his attendants please join me?' 25 The king replied, 'No, my son. All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.' Although Absalom urged him, he refused to go, but he gave him his blessing. 26 Then Absalom said, 'If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.' The king asked him, 'Why should he go with you?' 27 But Absalom pressed him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king's sons. 28 Absalom ordered his servants, saying, 'Watch when Amnon’s heart is cheerful from drinking wine, and when I say to you, "Strike Amnon down," then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I ordered you? Be strong and courageous.’ 29 So Absalom’s servants did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules, and fled. 30 While they were on the way, word came to David: 'Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons; not one of them is left.' 31 The king got up, tore his clothes, and lay on the ground, and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. 32 But Jonadab, son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, 'Don’t think that all the king’s sons have been killed. Only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s intention ever since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.' 33 Now, my lord the king, don’t take to heart the report that says all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead. 34 Meanwhile, Absalom fled. Now the watchman looked up and saw a large crowd coming down the hill on the road behind him. 35 Jonadab said to the king, 'Look, the king’s sons have come. It has happened just as your servant said.’ 36 As he finished speaking, the king’s sons arrived, weeping loudly. The king and all his servants also wept bitterly. 37 Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. David mourned for his son every day. 38 After Absalom fled to Geshur, he stayed there for three years. 39 King David longed to go to Absalom, for he had been consoled concerning Amnon’s death.

Ziba replied to the king, "He is staying in Jerusalem because he said, 'Today the house of Israel will restore to me my grandfather’s kingdom.'" 4 Then the king declared to Ziba, "Everything that belonged to Mephibosheth is now yours." Ziba said, "I humbly bow before you. May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king." 5 When King David reached Bahurim, a man from the family of Saul’s household came out, cursing as he approached. His name was Shimei, son of Gera. 6 He threw stones at David and all the servants of King David, even though all the people and the mighty warriors surrounded him on his right and left. 7 As he cursed, Shimei shouted, "Get out! Get out, you man of bloodshed, you worthless man! 8 The Lord has repaid you for all the bloodshed in the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. You are now caught in your own evil, for you are a man of bloodshed." 9 Then Abishai, son of Zeruiah, said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!" 10 But the king replied, "What does this have to do with you, sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord told him to curse David, who can ask, 'Why did you do this?'" 11 David then said to Abishai and all his servants, "Look, my own son who came from my own body is trying to take my life. How much more now this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. 12 Perhaps the Lord will look upon my affliction and repay me with good for the curses I am receiving today. 13 So David and his men continued along the road, while Shimei kept pace with him on the hillside opposite, cursing and throwing stones and dirt at him. 14 The king and all the people with him arrived exhausted, and he refreshed himself there. 15 Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him. 16 When Hushai the Arkite, David's friend, came to Absalom, he said to him, "Long live the king! Long live the king!" 17 Absalom said to Hushai, "Is this the loyalty you show your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?" 18 Hushai said to Absalom, "No, the one chosen by the Lord, by these people, and all the men of Israel—him I will serve, and with him I will remain. 19 Besides, whom should I serve? Should I not serve his son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you." 20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?" 21 Ahithophel answered, "Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he left to care for the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be strengthened." 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23 Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone inquiring of God. Such was all of Ahithophel’s advice to both David and Absalom.
