Why have you come to me now when you are in distress? 8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, Therefore we return to you now, that you may go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 9 And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, If you bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivers them before me, shall I be your head? 10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not do according to your words. 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh. 12 And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What have you to do with me, that you have come against me to fight in my land?
  • Judg 13:1-9 : 1 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years. 2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold now, you are barren and have no children: but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore beware, I pray you, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing: 5 For, behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines. 6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of an angel of God, very awesome: but I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name: 7 But he said to me, Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death. 8 Then Manoah entreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God whom you did send come again to us, and teach us what we shall do for the child who shall be born. 9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 And the woman quickly ran and told her husband, and said to him, Behold, the man has appeared to me, who came to me the other day. 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man, and said to him, Are you the man that spoke to the woman? And he said, I am. 12 And Manoah said, Now let your words come to pass. How shall we raise the child, and what shall we do for him? 13 And the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, Of all that I said to the woman let her beware. 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, nor let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe. 15 And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, I pray you, let us detain you, until we have made ready a young goat for you. 16 And the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, Though you detain me, I will not eat your bread: but if you will offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the LORD. • 1 Sam 3:1-9 : 1 And the child Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread vision. 2 And it happened at that time, when Eli was lying down in his place, and his eyes had begun to grow dim, that he could not see; 3 And before the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was lying down, 4 That the LORD called Samuel; and he answered, Here I am. 5 And he ran to Eli, and said, Here I am; for you called me. And he said, I did not call; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here I am; for you did call me. And he answered, I did not call, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him. 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. Then he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here I am; for you did call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, Speak, LORD; for your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for your servant hears. 11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do something in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house; when I begin, I will also make an end.

I am not he. But behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to untie. 26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whoever among you fears God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. 27 For those who dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet they asked Pilate that he should be killed. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead: 31 And he was seen for many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people. 32 And we declare to you glad tidings, that the promise which was made to the fathers, 33 God has fulfilled the same to us, their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, You are my Son, this day have I begotten you. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said this way, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, You shall not allow your Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, and was laid to his fathers, and saw corruption:

  • Judg 4:1-6:8 : 1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, after Ehud died. 2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried to the LORD, for Sisera had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel. 4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 And she sat under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, Has not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go, and lead the way to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I will draw Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude, to you at the river Kishon, and I will deliver him into your hand. 8 And Barak said to her, If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, then I will not go. 9 And she said, I will surely go with you; nevertheless the journey that you take shall not be for your glory, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. So Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet, and Deborah went up with him. 11 Now Heber the Kenite, of the children of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, had separated himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent by the great tree in Zaanaim, which is near Kedesh. 12 And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the river Kishon. 14 And Deborah said to Barak, Arise; for this is the day in which the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Is not the LORD gone out before you? So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 And the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak, so that Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots and after the army to Harosheth of the Gentiles; and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left. 17 However, Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; do not fear. And when he had turned in to her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket. 19 And he said to her, Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty. So she opened a jug of milk and gave him a drink, and covered him. 20 Then he said to her, Stand in the door of the tent, and if anyone comes and asks you, Is there a man here? you shall say, No. 21 Then Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and a hammer in her hand, went softly to him, and drove the peg into his temples, and it went down into the ground, for he was fast asleep and exhausted. So he died. 22 And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek. And when he came into her tent, there lay Sisera dead, with the peg in his temples. 23 So God subdued Jabin king of Canaan on that day before the children of Israel. 24 And the hand of the children of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. 1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying, 2 Praise the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. 3 Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes; I, even I, will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel. 4 LORD, when you went out of Seir, when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens poured, the clouds also poured water. 5 The mountains melted before the LORD, even that Sinai, before the LORD God of Israel. 6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned, and the travelers walked through byways. 7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, that I arose a mother in Israel. 8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates; was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? 9 My heart is with the rulers of Israel, who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the LORD. 10 Speak, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit in judgment, and walk by the way. 11 Those who are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of His villages in Israel; then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates. 12 Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song; arise, Barak, and lead your captives captive, son of Abinoam. 13 Then He made him who remains have dominion over the nobles among the people; the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty. 14 Out of Ephraim came those with roots against Amalek; after you, Benjamin, with your people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun those who handle the pen of the scribe. 15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak; he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart. 16 Why did you stay among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart. 17 Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan; and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued at the sea shore, and remained in his inlets. 18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people who risked their lives to the death in the high places of the field. 19 The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money. 20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. 21 The river Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, you have trodden down strength. 22 Then were the horsehoofs broken by the prancing, the prancing of their mighty ones. 23 Curse Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse bitterly its inhabitants; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty. 24 Blessed above women shall Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, be; blessed shall she be above women in the tent. 25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a noble dish. 26 She put her hand to the tent peg, and her right hand to the workman's hammer; and with the hammer she struck Sisera, she struck off his head, when she had pierced and struck through his temples. 27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down; at her feet he bowed, he fell; where he bowed, there he fell down dead. 28 The mother of Sisera looked out of a window, and cried through the lattice, 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? why do the wheels of his chariots delay?' 29 Her wise ladies answered her, yes, she returned answer to herself, 30 'Have they not found and divided the spoil? To every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, a spoil of dyed garments embroidered, dyed garments embroidered on both sides, for the necks of those who take the spoil?' 31 So let all your enemies perish, O LORD; but let those who love Him be as the sun when it comes out in its strength. And the land had rest for forty years. 1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years. 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel, and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strongholds. 3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; 4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth till you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey. 5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as locusts in multitude; for both they and their camels were without number, and they entered into the land to destroy it. 6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD. 7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, 8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, who said unto them, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

  • 1 Sam 17:1-9 : 1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle, and assembled at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and camped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel gathered and camped by the Valley of Elah, setting the battle in array against the Philistines. 3 The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. 4 A champion came out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and was armed with a coat of mail, and the coat weighed five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 He wore bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. 7 The staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron, and a shield-bearer went before him. 8 He stood and cried to the armies of Israel and said to them, Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 When Saul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years. 13 The three eldest sons of Jesse followed Saul to the battle, and the names of his three sons who went were Eliab the firstborn, next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 David was the youngest; the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16 The Philistine drew near morning and evening and presented himself for forty days. 17 Jesse said to David his son, Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers. 18 Carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand and see how your brothers fare and take their pledge.
  • 1 Sam 28:3-9 : 3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned him and buried him in Ramah, in his own city. And Saul had expelled those with familiar spirits and the wizards from the land. 4 The Philistines assembled and camped in Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they camped in Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. 6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 7 Then Saul said to his servants, Seek me a woman with a familiar spirit, that I may go to her and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman with a familiar spirit at Endor. 8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on different clothing, and he went with two men, and they came to the woman by night. And he said, Please, divine for me by the familiar spirit, and bring up for me the one whom I shall name to you. 9 And the woman said to him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cast out those with familiar spirits and the wizards from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die? 10 And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, there shall be no punishment happen to you for this thing. 11 Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up for you? And he said, Bring up Samuel for me. 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice, and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul. 13 And the king said to her, Do not be afraid. What do you see? And the woman said to Saul, I see gods ascending out of the earth. 14 And he said to her, What form does he have? And she said, An old man comes up, and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground. 15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am in great distress; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do. 16 Then Samuel said, Why do you ask me, seeing the LORD has departed from you and has become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done to you as he spoke by me: for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD, nor execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you today. 19 Moreover, the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me: the LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. 20 Then Saul fell immediately full length on the ground, and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all day nor all night. 21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, Behold, your maidservant has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. 22 Now therefore, please listen also to the voice of your maidservant, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way. 23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, urged him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the ground and sat on the bed. 24 The woman had a fat calf in the house; she hurried, killed it, and took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread. 25 And she brought it before Saul and his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
