  • Acts 28:1-9 : 1 And when they had escaped, they learned that the island was called Malta. 2 And the native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because of the rain and the cold. 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to each other, Certainly this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, justice does not allow to live. 5 And he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 However, they expected that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead; but after they had looked a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. 7 In the same region were estates of the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, prayed, laid his hands on him, and healed him. 9 So when this was done, others who had diseases on the island also came and were healed. 10 They also honored us in many ways, and when we departed, they provided us with such things as were necessary. 11 After three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered at the island, whose figurehead was the Twin Brothers. 12 And landing at Syracuse, we stayed there three days. 13 From there we circled around and reached Rhegium. After one day the south wind blew, and the next day we came to Puteoli. 14 There we found brethren and were invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome. 15 And from there, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage. 16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him. 17 After three days, Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. When they had come together, he said to them, Men and brethren, though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 When they had examined me, they wanted to release me, because there was no cause for putting me to death. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything to accuse my nation of. 20 For this reason, therefore, I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21 And they said to him, We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what you think, for concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against. 23 And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some did not believe. 25 And when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word, The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers, 26 saying, Go to this people and say, Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you will see, and not perceive. 27 For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, so that I should heal them. 28 Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it. 29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves. 30 Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.

  • Acts 21:28-36 : 28 Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place: and furthermore he brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place. 29 (For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30 And all the city was disturbed, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and dragged him out of the temple: and immediately the doors were shut. 31 And as they went about to kill him, news came to the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the chief captain came near, took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and asked who he was, and what he had done. 34 And some cried one thing, and some another, among the crowd: and when he could not determine the truth because of the uproar, he commanded him to be carried into the barracks. 35 And when he reached the stairs, so it was, that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob. 36 For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.
  • Acts 22:1-9 : 1 Men, brothers, and fathers, listen to my defense which I now present to you. 2 And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they became even more silent. And he said, 3 I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, as you all are today. 4 And I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. 5 As also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem, to be punished. 6 And it happened, that as I made my journey and was near Damascus around noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? 8 And I answered, Who are you, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute. 9 And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of him who spoke to me. 10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus, and there it shall be told to you everything that is appointed for you to do. 11 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. 12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews who dwelt there, 13 Came to me, and stood, and said to me, Brother Saul, receive your sight. And at that very moment, I looked up at him. 14 And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen you, that you should know his will and see that Righteous One, and should hear the voice of his mouth. 15 For you shall be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why do you delay? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance, 18 And saw him saying to me, Make haste and get quickly out of Jerusalem, for they will not receive your testimony concerning me. 19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and kept the clothes of those who killed him. 21 And he said to me, Depart, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles. 22 And they listened to him until this word, and then lifted up their voices and said, Away with such a person from the earth, for it is not fit for him to live. 23 And as they cried out and threw off their clothes, and threw dust into the air, 24 The chief captain ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and directed that he be examined by scourging, to find out why they shouted so against him. 25 And as they bound him with straps, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned? 26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman. 27 Then the chief captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? He said, Yes. 28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum I obtained this freedom. And Paul said, But I was born free. 29 Then immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him; and the chief captain also was afraid, after he realized he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. 30 On the next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
