  • 1 Kgs 1:5-9 : 5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, Why have you done so? And he also was a very handsome man; and his mother bore him after Absalom. 7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him. 8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. 9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside Enrogel, and called all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah, the king's servants. 10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he did not call. 11 Therefore Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord does not know it? 12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray you, give you advice, that you may save your own life, and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go and approach King David, and say to him, Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your servant, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign? 14 Behold, while you yet speak there with the king, I also will come in after you, and confirm your words. 15 And Bathsheba went to the king into the chamber; and the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king. 16 And Bathsheba bowed and did homage to the king. And the king said, What do you wish? 17 And she said to him, My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your servant, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. 18 And now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and now, my lord the king, you do not know it.
  • 1 Kgs 2:13-25 : 13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Do you come peaceably? And he said, Peaceably. 14 He said moreover, I have something to say unto you. And she said, Speak on. 15 And he said, You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel had their eyes on me, that I should reign; however, the kingdom has turned and has become my brother's, for it was his from the Lord. 16 And now I ask one request of you, do not deny me. And she said unto him, Speak on. 17 And he said, Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you, that he would give me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife. 18 And Bathsheba said, Very well; I will speak for you to the king. 19 Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself to her, and sat down on his throne, and had a seat set for the king's mother; and she sat at his right hand. 20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of you; please do not deny me. And the king said to her, Ask on, my mother, for I will not refuse you. 21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as his wife. 22 And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, And why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother—for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah. 23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, God do so to me, and more, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life. 24 Now therefore, as the Lord lives, who has established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as He promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today. 25 And King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him and he died.
