  • 1 Kgs 4:21-24 : 21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt: they brought presents and served Solomon all the days of his life. 22 And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour and sixty measures of meal, 23 Ten fat oxen, twenty oxen from the pastures, and a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fatted fowl. 24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side of the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on this side of the River: and he had peace on all sides around him.
  • Eccl 2:1-9 : 1 I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure." And behold, this also is vanity. 2 I said of laughter, "It is madness," and of mirth, "What does it accomplish?" 3 I searched in my heart to give myself to wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what is good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives. 4 I made great works; I built houses for myself; I planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made gardens and orchards for myself, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made pools of water for myself, to water the forest that grows trees. 7 I acquired male and female servants, and had servants born in my house; also, I had great possessions of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me. 8 I gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and various kinds of musical instruments. 9 So I became great and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also, my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced in all my labor; and this was my reward from all my labor. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor I had toiled to do; and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. 12 I turned to consider wisdom, madness, and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done.
