These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation. 16 And to the office of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, pertains the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and all that is in it, in the sanctuary, and in its vessels. 17 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 18 Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites: 19 But do this for them, that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint every one to his service and to his burden: 20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die. 21 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, by their families, by the house of their fathers; 23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, shall you number them; all that enter to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. 24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve and bear burdens: 25 And they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, its covering, and the covering of badgers' skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, 26 And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar all around, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve. 27 At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and you shall appoint to them in charge all their burdens. 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 29 As for the sons of Merari, you shall number them by their families, by the house of their fathers; 30 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old you shall number them, every one that enters into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation. 31 And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets, 32 And the pillars of the court all around, and their sockets, and their pegs, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name you shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden. 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 34 And Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by the house of their fathers, 35 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that enters into service, for work in the tabernacle of the congregation: 36 And those that were numbered by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 38 And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by the house of their fathers, 39 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that enters into service, for work in the tabernacle of the congregation, 40 Even those that were numbered by their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand six hundred and thirty. 41 These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD. 42 And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by the house of their fathers, 43 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that enters into service, for work in the tabernacle of the congregation, 44 Even those that were numbered after their families, were three thousand two hundred. 45 These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 46 All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel numbered, by their families, and by the house of their fathers, 47 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation, 48 Even those that were numbered of them were eight thousand five hundred and eighty. 49 According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus they were numbered, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  • Num 8:1-9 : 1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Speak to Aaron, and say to him, When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand. 3 And Aaron did so; he lit the lamps in front of the lampstand, as the LORD commanded Moses. 4 And this work of the lampstand was of hammered gold, from its shaft to its flowers, it was hammered work: according to the pattern the LORD had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand. 5 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel and cleanse them. 7 And thus shall you do to them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purification upon them, let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and make themselves clean. 8 Then let them take a young bull with its grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil, and another young bull you shall take for a sin offering. 9 And you shall bring the Levites before the tabernacle of meeting, and gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel together. 10 And you shall bring the Levites before the LORD, and the children of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites. 11 And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the children of Israel, that they may perform the service of the LORD. 12 The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the young bulls, and you shall offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites. 13 And you shall set the Levites before Aaron and his sons and offer them as a wave offering to the LORD. 14 Thus shall you separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. 15 After that, the Levites shall go in to perform the service of the tabernacle of meeting, and you shall cleanse them and offer them as a wave offering. 16 For they are wholly given to me among the children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them for myself. 17 For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them to myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn of the children of Israel. 19 And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the children of Israel, to perform the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel, that there be no plague among the children of Israel when they come near the sanctuary. 20 Thus Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel did to the Levites; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them as a wave offering before the LORD, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. 22 After that, the Levites went in to perform their service in the tabernacle of meeting before Aaron and his sons; as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them. 23 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 24 This is what regards the Levites: from twenty-five years old and above, they shall go in to perform the work in the tabernacle of meeting. 25 And at the age of fifty years, they shall cease performing this work and shall serve no more. 26 But they may minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of meeting, to attend to needs, but shall do no work. Thus shall you do to the Levites regarding their duties.

And Kohath begot Amram.
  • Deut 33:8-9 : 8 And of Levi he said, Let your Thummim and your Urim be with your holy one, whom you tried at Massah, and with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah; 9 Who said to his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brothers, nor knew his own children: for they have observed your word, and kept your covenant. 10 They shall teach Jacob your judgments, and Israel your law: they shall put incense before you, and whole burnt sacrifice upon your altar. 11 Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands: strike through the loins of those that rise against him, and of those that hate him, that they rise not again.

  • 1 Chr 22:1-9 : 1 Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. 2 And David commanded to gather together the foreigners who were in the land of Israel; and he appointed masons to cut hewn stones to build the house of God. 3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the fittings; and bronze in abundance beyond weight; 4 Also cedar trees in abundance, for the Sidonians and those of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. 5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all nations: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. 6 Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build a house for the LORD God of Israel. 7 And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build a house unto the name of the LORD my God: 8 But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, You have shed much blood and have made great wars; you shall not build a house unto my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. 9 Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him peace from all his enemies around: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days. 10 He shall build a house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. 11 Now, my son, the LORD be with you; and prosper you, and build the house of the LORD your God, as he has said of you. 12 Only may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. 13 Then you shall prosper, if you take heed to fulfill the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; do not fear, nor be dismayed. 14 Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD one hundred thousand talents of gold, and a million talents of silver; and of bronze and iron beyond weight, for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and you may add to them. 15 Moreover there are workmen with you in abundance, stone cutters and workers of stone and timber, and all kinds of skillful men for every kind of work. 16 Of the gold, the silver, and the bronze, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with you. 17 David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18 Is not the LORD your God with you? And has he not given you rest on every side? For he has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD and before his people. 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built for the name of the LORD.
