The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was living in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran. 3 'He said to him, 'Leave your country and your relatives and come to the land that I will show you.' 4 So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God brought him to this land where you are now living. 5 But God gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him as a possession and to his descendants after him, even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to Abraham in this way: 'Your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. 7 But I will judge the nation that they serve as slaves,' said God, 'and afterward, they will come out and worship me in this place.' 8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. Under this covenant, Abraham became the father of Isaac, and on the eighth day, he circumcised him. Isaac then became the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of the twelve patriarchs. 9 Because they were jealous of Joseph, the patriarchs sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him. 10 God rescued him from all his troubles, and He granted him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and all his household. 11 Then a famine came over the entire land of Egypt and Canaan, bringing great distress, and our ancestors could not find food. 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there for the first time. 13 On their second visit, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh. 14 Joseph sent for his father Jacob and all his relatives, seventy-five in total. 15 So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died. 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor at Shechem. 17 As the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise He had made to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt. 18 Then another king arose in Egypt, one who did not know Joseph. 19 This king dealt deceitfully with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to abandon their infants, so they would not survive. 20 At that time, Moses was born, and he was beautiful in God's sight. He was cared for in his father's house for three months. 21 When he was abandoned, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action. 23 When he was forty years old, it entered his heart to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel. 24 When Moses saw someone being mistreated, he came to his defense and avenged the oppressed man by striking down the Egyptian. 25 Moses assumed that his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not understand. 26 The next day, he appeared to two of them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why are you hurting each other?' 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor pushed Moses away and said, 'Who made you ruler and judge over us?' 28 'Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' the man continued. 29 When Moses heard this, he fled and became a foreigner in the land of Midian, where he had two sons. 30 After forty years had passed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the wilderness near Mount Sinai. 31 Moses was amazed at what he saw. As he approached to look more closely, he heard the voice of the Lord say, 32 'I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look closely. 33 Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.' 34 'I have surely seen the oppression of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning. I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.' 35 This same Moses, whom they had rejected by saying, 'Who made you ruler and judge?'—this is the one God sent as ruler and deliverer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This is the one who led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years. 37 This is the same Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.' 38 This is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; he received living words to pass on to us. 39 But our ancestors were unwilling to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 40 They said to Aaron, 'Make us gods who will lead us, for we do not know what has happened to this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt.' 41 At that time, they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, rejoicing in the works of their hands. 42 But God turned away and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you bring me offerings and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, house of Israel?' 43 'You have taken up the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images you made to worship. Therefore, I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.' 44 Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. 45 Our ancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David. 46 David found favor in God’s sight and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built Him a house. 48 However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says: 49 Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? 50 Did not my hand make all these things? 51 You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have betrayed and murdered him— 53 you who received the law through angels but have not obeyed it. 54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 He said, 'Look, I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.' 57 At this they covered their ears and, shouting at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him. 58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' 60 Then he fell to his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' When he had said this, he fell asleep. 1 Saul was in full agreement with his execution. On that day, a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all the believers, except the apostles, were scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.
- Acts 8:5-9 : 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed Christ to them. 6 The crowds, united in one mind, paid close attention to what Philip was saying as they heard and saw the miraculous signs he was performing. 7 For many who were possessed by unclean spirits were freed as the spirits came out, crying out in a loud voice, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. 9 Now there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone, from the least to the greatest, paid attention to him and said, 'This man is the great power of God.' 11 They followed him because he had amazed them with his magic for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after he was baptized, he stayed close to Philip, and he marveled as he watched the signs and miracles that were happening. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit, 16 For the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money. 19 He said, 'Give me this authority too, so that everyone I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.' 20 But Peter said to him, 'May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!' 21 You have no part or share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such thoughts in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin. 24 Then Simon answered, 'Pray to the Lord for me, so that nothing you have said may happen to me.' 25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the good news to many Samaritan villages. 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.' (This is a desert road.) 27 So he got up and went. There he met an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and an important official in charge of all the treasury of the queen of the Ethiopians, known as Candace, who had gone to Jerusalem to worship. 28 He was on his way home, sitting in his chariot and reading the book of the prophet Isaiah. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go up to that chariot and stay near it.' 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. He asked, 'Do you understand what you are reading?' 31 The man replied, 'How can I understand unless someone guides me?' And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The passage of Scripture he was reading was this: 'Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.' 33 In his humiliation justice was taken away from him. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth. 34 The eunuch said to Philip, 'I ask you, who is the prophet talking about? Himself or someone else?' 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting from this Scripture, he preached to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'Look, here is water! What is stopping me from being baptized?' 37 Philip said, 'If you believe with all your heart, you may.' The eunuch answered, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.' 38 He ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, was found at Azotus, and as he traveled, he preached the good news in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
