He stationed all the people, each man with his weapon in hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side, along the altar and the temple, surrounding the king on every side.
They brought out the king's son, placed the crown and the testimony on him, and made him king. Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said, 'Long live the king!'
When Athaliah heard the sound of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people in the house of the Lord.
When Athaliah looked, she saw the king standing by his pillar at the entrance. The commanders and the trumpeters were with the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. The singers with their musical instruments were leading in songs of praise. Then Athaliah tore her garments and shouted, 'Treason! Treason!'
Jehoiada the priest brought out the commanders of hundreds who were in charge of the troops and said to them, 'Take her out between the ranks and put to death with the sword anyone who follows her.' For the priest said, 'Do not put her to death in the house of the Lord.'
So they seized her, and she came to the entrance of the Horse Gate by the king's palace, and there they put her to death.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king that they would be the Lord's people.
All the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars.
