The guards stood with their weapons in hand, from the south side of the temple to the north side, by the altar and around the king.
Jehoiada brought out the king's son, crowned him, presented him with the testimony, and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, clapped their hands, and shouted, 'Long live the king!'
When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she came to the people in the temple of the LORD.
She saw the king standing by the pillar as was the custom. The commanders and the trumpeters were with the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes and shouted, 'Treason! Treason!'
Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds, the officers of the army, 'Take her outside the ranks, and whoever follows her, put them to death by the sword.' For the priest had said, 'She must not be killed in the temple of the LORD.'
So they seized her, and she was taken by the way of the horse's entrance to the palace, and there she was put to death.
Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD, the king, and the people, so that they would be the LORD's people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
The people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars. Then Jehoiada the priest stationed guards at the temple of the LORD.
