  • Ezra 7:11-28 : 11 This is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, a scribe skilled in the commandments of the Lord and His statutes for Israel: 12 "Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven. Perfect peace, and now: 13 I issue a decree that any willing person from the people of Israel, including the priests and Levites in my kingdom, may go with you to Jerusalem. 14 For you are sent by the king and his seven counselors to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of your God, which is in your hand. 15 And to bring the silver and gold that the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem. 16 Together with all the silver and gold you may find in the whole province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and the priests given for the house of their God in Jerusalem. 17 With this silver, you shall diligently buy bulls, rams, and lambs, along with their grain and drink offerings, and offer them on the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem. 18 And whatever seems best to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God. 19 Also, deliver the vessels that are given to you for the service of the house of your God in Jerusalem. 20 And whatever else may be needed for the house of your God that it falls upon you to provide, you may do so from the royal treasury. 21 And I, King Artaxerxes, hereby issue a command to all the treasurers of the region beyond the river: Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, may request of you, it must be done promptly, 22 up to one hundred talents of silver, one hundred cors of wheat, one hundred baths of wine, one hundred baths of oil, and salt without limit. 23 Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be carried out diligently for the house of the God of heaven, so that there may not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons. 24 Furthermore, we notify you that it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, tax, or toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or other workers in this house of God. 25 And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, are to appoint judges and magistrates who can judge all the people in the region beyond the River—all those who know the laws of your God. And for anyone who does not know them, you shall teach them. 26 Anyone who does not obey the law of your God and the law of the king shall face judgment promptly, whether it be death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment. 27 Blessed be the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. 28 And who has shown favor to me before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. • Neh 2:6-9 : 6 Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, "How long will your journey take, and when will you return?" It pleased the king to send me, so I set a time. 7 I also said to the king, "If it pleases the king, may letters be given to me for the governors of the region beyond the Euphrates, so they will allow me to pass through until I arrive in Judah, 8 and may I have a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the royal forest, that he might give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress by the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy." And the king granted my requests, because the gracious hand of my God was on me. 9 So I went to the governors of the region beyond the Euphrates and gave them the king's letters. The king also sent army officers and cavalry with me. 10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were deeply displeased that someone had come to seek the welfare of the Israelites.
  • Esth 8:1-9 : 1 On that day, King Ahasuerus gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came into the king’s presence because Esther had revealed how he was related to her. 2 The king removed his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed Mordecai over Haman’s estate. 3 Esther spoke again to the king, falling at his feet, weeping, and pleading with him to nullify the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the scheme he had devised against the Jews. 4 The king extended the golden scepter to Esther, so she arose and stood before the king. 5 She said, 'If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the matter seems right to the king, and if I am pleasing in his eyes, let a decree be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman, son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.' 6 For how can I bear to see the disaster that will fall on my people? How can I endure the destruction of my kindred? 7 King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, 'Behold, I have given Haman’s estate to Esther, and he has been hanged on the gallows because he attacked the Jews.' 8 Now you may write in the king’s name concerning the Jews as you see fit and seal it with the king’s signet ring. For a document written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s ring cannot be revoked. 9 The king’s scribes were summoned on that day, the third month (the month of Sivan), on the twenty-third day, and an edict was written exactly as Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to the satraps, governors, and officials of the 127 provinces from India to Cush, each province in its own script and language, and to the Jews in their own script and language. 10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, sealed it with the king’s signet ring, and sent the letters by mounted couriers riding fast horses bred from royal mares.
