But you, all your strong warriors, fully armed, must cross ahead of your brothers and help them. 15 Until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as He has given you, and they also take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them, then you may return to the land of your possession and settle it—the land that Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise. 16 They answered Joshua, saying, “We will do everything you have commanded us, and we will go wherever you send us. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in everything, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you as He was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command shall be put to death. • Num 32:20-29 : 20 Moses said to them, "If you will do this—if you arm yourselves for battle before the Lord, 21 and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven out His enemies from His presence— 22 then the land will be subdued before the Lord, and afterward you may return and be free from obligation to the Lord and Israel. This land will then be your possession before the Lord. 23 But if you do not do this, you will have sinned against the Lord. Be sure your sin will find you out. 24 Build cities for your children and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised. 25 The sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben said to Moses, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands. 26 Our children, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead, 27 but your servants, every armed man of war, will cross over before the Lord to battle, just as my lord says." 28 So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 29 Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben cross the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
  • Deut 3:16-20 : 16 To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the land extending from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, with the valley as the border, as far as the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites. 17 The Arabah, the Jordan, and its border, from Chinnereth to the east side of the Dead Sea (the Sea of the Arabah), beneath the slopes of Pisgah, was also included. 18 At that time I commanded you: 'The LORD your God has given you this land to take possession of it. All your fighting men, fully armed, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.' 19 'But your wives, children, and livestock—I know you have much livestock—may stay in the towns I have given you.' 20 'You are to help your fellow Israelites until the LORD gives them rest, as He has done for you, and they too have taken possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may return to the possession I have given you.'
