And Julius courteously treated Paul, and gave him liberty to go to his friends to refresh himself. 4 And when we departed from there, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. 5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. 6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing to Italy; and he put us on it. 7 And when we had sailed slowly for many days, and barely came opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us, we sailed under Crete, opposite Salmone; 8 And with difficulty passing it, came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea. 9 Now when much time had been spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was already past, Paul admonished them, 10 And said to them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will result in disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also of our lives. 11 Nevertheless, the centurion believed the master and owner of the ship more than what was spoken by Paul. 12 And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to sail from there also, if by any means they might reach Phoenix, to winter there; which is a harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest. 13 And when the south wind blew softly, they assumed they had obtained their purpose, setting sail, they sailed close by Crete. 14 But not long after, a tempestuous wind arose, called Euroclydon. 15 And when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we let her be driven. 16 And running under a certain island called Clauda, we had much work to secure the boat: 17 Which when they had taken up, they used aids to undergird the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, they lowered the sail, and so were driven. 18 And being exceedingly tossed by a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship; 19 And on the third day we cast out, with our own hands, the ship's tackle. 20 And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then lost. 21 But after long abstinence, Paul stood forth in their midst, and said, Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete, and incurred this harm and loss. 22 And now I exhort you to take courage: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, 24 Saying, Do not fear, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar: and indeed, God has granted you all those who sail with you. 25 Therefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it will be just as it was told to me. 26 However, we must be cast upon a certain island. 27 But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the sailors sensed that they were nearing land; 28 And they sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms. 29 Then fearing lest we should be driven upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for daybreak. 30 And as the sailors were attempting to escape from the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under pretext of laying out anchors from the prow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved. 32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall away. 33 And while the day was coming, Paul urged them all to take food, saying, This is the fourteenth day that you have waited and continued fasting, having taken nothing. 34 Therefore I urge you to take nourishment: for this is for your safety: for not a hair will fall from the head of any of you. 35 And when he had said this, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. 36 Then they were all encouraged, and they also took food. 37 And we were in all on the ship two hundred seventy-six souls. 38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and threw the wheat into the sea. 39 And when it was day, they did not recognize the land: but they observed a certain creek with a shore, into which they planned, if it were possible, to run the ship. 40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted the mainsail to the wind, and made for shore. 41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the bow stuck fast, and remained immovable, but the stern was broken up by the violence of the waves. 42 And the soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them swim away and escape. 43 But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to land: 44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on parts of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safely to land. 1 And when they had escaped, they learned that the island was called Malta. 2 And the native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because of the rain and the cold. 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to each other, Certainly this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, justice does not allow to live. 5 And he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 However, they expected that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead; but after they had looked a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. 7 In the same region were estates of the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, prayed, laid his hands on him, and healed him. 9 So when this was done, others who had diseases on the island also came and were healed. 10 They also honored us in many ways, and when we departed, they provided us with such things as were necessary. 11 After three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered at the island, whose figurehead was the Twin Brothers. 12 And landing at Syracuse, we stayed there three days. 13 From there we circled around and reached Rhegium. After one day the south wind blew, and the next day we came to Puteoli. 14 There we found brethren and were invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome. 15 And from there, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage. 16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
