1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

3 Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Is it not in your eyes as nothing compared to it?
4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, says the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land, says the LORD, and work: for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts.
14 Then Haggai answered and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before Me, says the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.
15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day onward, before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts: and in this place I will give peace, says the LORD of hosts.
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
8 Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones, and timber is being laid in the walls, and this work is going on rapidly and prospers in their hands.
9 Then we asked those elders and said to them, Who commanded you to build this house and to finish these walls?
9 Thus says the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, you who hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built.
9 In my ears said the LORD of hosts, Truly many houses shall be desolate, even great and beautiful, without inhabitant.
15 And he said to him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.
16 Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and from that time even until now it has been in building, and yet it is not completed.
17 Now therefore, if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the king's treasure house, which is there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was made by king Cyrus to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his decision to us concerning this matter.
8 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.
10 And you have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses you have broken down to fortify the wall.
8 And at this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why has the LORD done this to this land and to this house?
7 Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.
12 Surely, when the wall has fallen, will it not be said to you, 'Where is the daubing with which you have daubed it?'
3 At the same time, Tatnai, governor on this side of the river, and Shetharboznai, and their companions, came to them and said, Who has commanded you to build this house and to finish this wall?
4 Then we said to them in this manner, What are the names of the men who are building this building?
11 And they returned an answer to us, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and set up.
12 But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to anger, He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people away to Babylon.
13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.
21 And this house, which is exalted, shall be an astonishment to everyone who passes by it; so that they will say, Why has the LORD done this to this land and to this house?
18 Consider now, from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it.
20 And again the word of the LORD came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
3 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will allow you to dwell in this place.
5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.
5 And let them deliver it into the hand of those who do the work, who have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to those who do the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,
6 To carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and cut stone to repair the house.
11 For behold, the LORD commands, and He will strike the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said to them, You have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built?
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD.
5 You have not gone up into the gaps nor built a hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle on the day of the LORD.
18 But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house which I have built!
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people were few in it, and the houses were not built.
