They recorded their lineage by their clans and ancestral houses, counting the names of those twenty years old or older, individually, 19 just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So they counted them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were recorded by their generations, families, and ancestral houses, by name, individually, all the males twenty years old or older, all who could serve in the army. 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. 22 The descendants of Simeon were recorded by their generations, by their families, and by their ancestral houses, all the males twenty years old or older, individually counted, all able to serve in the army. 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. 24 The descendants of Gad were recorded by their generations, by their families, and by their ancestral houses, all the males twenty years old or older, individually counted, all able to serve in the army. 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650. 26 The descendants of Judah were recorded by their generations, by their families, and by their ancestral houses, all the males twenty years old or older, individually counted, all able to serve in the army.
  • 1 Sam 1:1-9 : 1 There was a man from Ramathaim-Zophim, in the hill country of Ephraim. His name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2 He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other was Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 Year after year, this man would go up from his city to worship and to offer sacrifices to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as priests of the LORD. 4 On the day Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6 Her rival provoked her severely to irritate her because the LORD had closed her womb. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival would provoke her, and she would weep and not eat. 8 Then her husband Elkanah said to her, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?' 9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah arose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 10 In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly. 11 She made a vow, saying, 'LORD of Hosts, if You will indeed look upon the affliction of Your servant and remember me, and not forget Your servant, but give Your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head.' 12 As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore, Eli thought she was drunk. 14 Eli said to her, 'How long will you remain drunk? Put away your wine!' 15 Hannah answered, 'No, my lord. I am a woman deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD.' 16 Do not consider your servant a worthless woman. It is out of my great sorrow and distress that I have been speaking until now.' 17 Then Eli answered, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.' 18 She said, 'May your servant find favor in your eyes.' Then she went her way, and she ate, and her face was no longer downcast. 19 Early in the morning, they arose and worshiped before the LORD, and then they returned to their home in Ramah. Elkanah was intimate with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. 20 In the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, 'Because I asked the LORD for him.' 21 When Elkanah and all his household went up to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, 'After the boy is weaned, I will take him to appear before the LORD, and he will remain there permanently.' 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, 'Do what seems best to you. Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD establish His word.' So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 After she had weaned him, she took him along with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. The boy was young. 25 They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli. 26 She said, 'Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. 27 I prayed for this boy, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him. 28 Now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.' And they worshiped the LORD there.
