  • Josh 6:1-9 : 1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. 2 And the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have given into your hand Jericho, and its king, and the mighty men of valor. 3 And you shall surround the city, all you men of war, and go around the city once. You shall do this for six days. 4 And seven priests shall carry before the ark seven trumpets of ram's horns: and on the seventh day you shall surround the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of ram's horns before the ark of the LORD. 7 And he said to the people, Proceed, and surround the city, and let him who is armed go on before the ark of the LORD. 8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of ram's horns went before the LORD, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. 9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark, the priests going on, and blowing the trumpets. 10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, You shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout; then shall you shout. 11 So the ark of the LORD went around the city, circling it once: and they came into the camp, and stayed in the camp. 12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13 And seven priests carrying seven trumpets of ram's horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing the trumpets. 14 And the second day they surrounded the city once, and returned to the camp: this they did for six days. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawn of the day, and surrounded the city in the same manner seven times: only on that day they surrounded the city seven times. 16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, Shout; for the LORD has given you the city. 17 And the city shall be accursed, it and all that are in it, to the LORD: only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in her house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. 18 And you, by all means keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest you make yourselves accursed, when you take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. 19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD. 20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. 21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.
  • Neh 13:1-9 : 1 On that day they read from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written that the Ammonite and the Moabite should never enter the assembly of God forever, 2 because they did not meet the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them; however, our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 So it happened, when they heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel. 4 Before this, Eliashib the priest, who was in charge of the chambers of the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah; 5 and he had prepared for him a large room, where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, new wine, and oil, which were commanded to be given to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers, as well as the offerings for the priests. 6 But all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon, I had come to the king. After some time, I obtained leave from the king, 7 and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. 8 This upset me very much; so I threw all of Tobiah’s household goods out of the room. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the rooms; and I brought back into them the vessels of the house of God, along with the grain offerings and the frankincense. 10 I also realized that the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, so the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field. 11 So I contended with the rulers, and said, Why has the house of God been forsaken? And I gathered them together and placed them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, for they were considered trustworthy, and their task was to distribute to their brethren. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for its services. 15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys, as well as bringing in wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day they sold provisions. 16 Men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, What evil thing is this that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers do this, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath. 19 So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the Sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I warned them, and said to them, Why do you spend the night around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time on they came no more on the Sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and come and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy. 23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab; 24 and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of each people. 25 So I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. 26 Did not King Solomon of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless, pagan women caused even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women? 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore, I drove him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. 30 Thus I cleansed them of everything foreign, and I assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service, 31 and for the offering of wood at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
