Therefore, I will punish Him and release Him.' 23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the one they asked for, who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he handed Jesus over to their will. 26 As they led Him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. 27 A large crowd of people followed Him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.' 30 Then they will say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!' 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? 32 Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Him. 33 When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals—one on His right and the other on His left. 34 And Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' Then they divided His garments by casting lots. 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even mocked Him, saying, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.' 36 The soldiers also mocked Him. The servant's name was Malchus. 11 But Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back into its sheath! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?' 12 Then the detachment of soldiers, their commander, and the Jewish officers arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 They led him first to Annas, because he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be better if one man died for the people.

• John 18:28-19:24 : 28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning, and they did not enter the headquarters themselves to avoid becoming ceremonially unclean, so that they could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went out to them and asked, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' 30 They answered him, 'If he weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.' 31 Pilate told them, 'Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.' 'It’s not lawful for us to put anyone to death,' the Jewish leaders replied. 32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken, indicating the kind of death he was going to die. 33 Then Pilate went back inside the governor’s headquarters, summoned Jesus, and asked him, 'Are you the King of the Jews?' 34 Jesus answered, 'Is that your own idea, or did others talk to you about me?' 35 Pilate replied, 'Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?' 36 Jesus said, 'My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight to prevent my being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.' 37 'So you are a king, then?' said Pilate. Jesus answered, 'You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this reason I came into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.' 38 'What is truth?' Pilate asked. After he said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, 'I find no basis for a charge against him.' 39 'But it is your custom that I release one prisoner to you at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release the King of the Jews?' 40 Then they all shouted again, saying, 'Not this man, but Barabbas!' Now Barabbas was a robber. 1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, placed it on his head, and dressed him in a purple robe. 3 They kept saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and slapped him repeatedly. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you so that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5 Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!" 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate responded, "Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no charge against him." 7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He went back into the governor's palace and asked Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Pilate said to him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to crucify you and the authority to release you?" 11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over me unless it had been given to you from above. Therefore, the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin. 12 Because of this, Pilate tried to release him. But the Jews kept shouting, "If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." 13 So Pilate, when he heard this statement, brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, which in Aramaic is called Gabbatha. 14 It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Here is your king!" 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." 16 So then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place called The Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign written and put on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'" 22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven from top to bottom. 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots to decide whose it shall be." This happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says, "They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." So this is what the soldiers did.

What is this testimony that these men are bringing against You?" 63 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, "I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God." 64 Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high priest tore his garments and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?" They answered, "He is guilty and deserves death." 67 Then they spat in His face and struck Him. Others slapped Him, 68 mocking and saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you?"
