  • Deut 1:1-9 : 1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab. 2 It is an eleven-day journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites according to all that the LORD had commanded him to tell them. 4 This was after he had defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and at Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying: 6 The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, 'You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and set out on your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors—the Arabah, the hill country, the lowlands, the Negev, and the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates. 8 See, I have set the land before you. Go and take possession of the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—and to their descendants after them. 9 At that time I said to you, 'I cannot carry you by myself alone. 10 The LORD your God has multiplied you, and now you are as numerous as the stars in the sky. 11 May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you as He has promised. 12 But how can I alone bear your troubles, your burdens, and your disputes? 13 Choose for yourselves wise, discerning, and known men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your leaders. 14 And you answered me and said, 'What you have proposed is good for us to do.' 15 So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and known men, and appointed them as heads over you—leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and officers for your tribes. 16 At that time, I commanded your judges, saying, 'Hear the disputes between your brothers and judge fairly between a man and his brother or the foreigner who is residing among them.' 17 Do not show partiality in judgment; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring any case that is too difficult for you to me, and I will hear it. 18 At that time, I commanded you concerning all the things you were to do. 19 Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 Then I said to you, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us.' 21 See, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession of it, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. 22 Then all of you approached me and said, 'Let us send men ahead of us to explore the land and bring back a report about the route we should take and the cities we will come to.' 23 The idea seemed good to me, so I selected twelve men from among you, one man for each tribe. 24 They set out and went up into the hill country, and they came to the Valley of Eshkol and explored it. 25 Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it back to us. And they reported, 'The land that the LORD our God is giving us is good.' 26 But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. 27 You grumbled in your tents and said, 'Because the LORD hates us, He brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.' 28 Where can we go? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying, 'The people are larger and taller than we are, the cities are great and fortified up to the heavens, and we even saw the descendants of the Anakim there.' 29 Then I said to you, 'Do not be terrified or afraid of them.' 30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you, just as He did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes. 31 And in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way you went, until you came to this place. 32 But in this matter, you did not trust in the LORD your God, 33 who went before you on the way to scout out a place for you to camp, by night in the fire to show you the way you should go, and by day in the cloud. 34 When the LORD heard what you said, He became angry and swore an oath: 35 Not one man of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, 36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land on which he walked, because he wholeheartedly followed the LORD. 37 The LORD was also angry with me because of you, and He said, 'You also will not enter there.' 38 Joshua son of Nun, who stands before you, will enter it. Strengthen him, because he will lead Israel to inherit it. 39 And the little ones you said would be taken as plunder—your children who do not yet know good from evil—they will enter the land. I will give it to them, and they will take possession of it. 40 But as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea. 41 Then you answered me and said, 'We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us.' So each of you strapped on his weapons of war and thought it would be easy to go up into the hill country. 42 But the LORD said to me, 'Tell them, "Do not go up or fight, because I am not with you; you will be defeated by your enemies."' 43 So I spoke to you, but you did not listen. You rebelled against the command of the LORD and presumptuously went up into the hill country. 44 Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do; they struck you down from Seir all the way to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before the LORD, but He did not listen to your cries or pay attention to you. 46 So you stayed in Kadesh for many days, as long as you remained there.

  • Josh 24:1-9 : 1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders of Israel, their leaders, judges, and officers, and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Long ago, your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. 3 But I took your ancestor Abraham from beyond the Euphrates River, led him throughout the land of Canaan, and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac. 4 And to Isaac, I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave the hill country of Seir to Esau to possess, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt. 5 Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt by what I did among them; and afterward, I brought you out. 6 When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. 7 Your ancestors cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians. He brought the sea over them and covered them. Your eyes witnessed what I did to Egypt. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time. 8 I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. You took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. 9 Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for Balaam son of Beor to curse you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam. Instead, he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his hand. 11 You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The leaders of Jericho, along with the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings from before you. It was not by your sword or bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities you did not build. You are living in them and eating from vineyards and olive groves you did not plant. 14 Now, fear the LORD and serve Him with sincerity and truth. Put away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if it seems undesirable to you to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve—whether the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD. 16 The people replied, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods! 17 For the LORD our God is the one who brought us and our ancestors up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. He performed great signs before our eyes, protected us along the entire way we traveled, and among all the peoples through whom we journeyed. 18 The LORD drove out all the peoples before us, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, for He is our God. 19 Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you abandon the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring harm to you and destroy you, after He has been good to you. 21 But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD. 22 Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD." And they said, "We are witnesses." 23 Now then," Joshua said, "put away the foreign gods that are among you, and direct your hearts toward the LORD, the God of Israel. 24 The people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice. 25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people at Shechem. He established for them a statute and a rule there. 26 Joshua recorded these words in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak tree near the sanctuary of the LORD. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, "See, this stone will serve as a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us. It will be a witness against you if you deny your God. 28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance. 29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten. 30 They buried him in the territory of his inheritance at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 31 Israel served the LORD during all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived him, those who had experienced all the deeds the LORD had done for Israel. 32 The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the plot of land Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of silver. It became an inheritance for Joseph's descendants. 33 Eleazar, the son of Aaron, died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which had been given to him in the hill country of Ephraim.
