In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned in Tirzah for seven days. The army was encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.

When the troops who were camped heard it said, 'Zimri has conspired and struck down the king,' all Israel made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that very day in the camp.

Then Omri and all Israel with him marched up from Gibbethon and besieged Tirzah.

When Zimri saw that the city was captured, he went into the citadel of the royal palace, set it on fire around him, and died.

This happened because of the sins he committed, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord and walking in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin, which he caused Israel to commit.

The rest of the acts of Zimri, and the conspiracy he carried out, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

At that time the people of Israel were divided into two factions: half supporting Tibni son of Ginath to make him king, and the other half supporting Omri.

But the people who supported Omri proved stronger than the people who supported Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died, and Omri became king.

In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king over Israel, and he reigned for twelve years, six of them in Tirzah.
