    23 Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: 'May God punish me ever so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his own life!

    13 Now Adonijah, the son of Haggith, came to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon. She asked, 'Do you come in peace?' And he replied, 'In peace.'

    14 Then he said, 'I have something to say to you.' She replied, 'Speak.'

    15 He said, 'You know that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel turned their faces to me to make me king. But the kingdom has been transferred and has become my brother's, for it was the LORD's will.'

    15 So Bathsheba went to see the king in his chamber. The king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to him.

    16 Bathsheba bowed low and paid homage to the king. The king asked her, "What is it you want?"

    17 She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore by the LORD your God to your servant, saying, 'Solomon your son will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.'
