    10When you approach a city to fight against it, offer it peace terms.

    11If it accepts your offer of peace and opens its gates to you, then all the people found in it shall serve you and work for you.

    12But if it does not make peace with you and wages war against you, then you shall besiege it.

    13When the LORD your God delivers it into your hands, strike down every male there with the sword.

    14However, you may take the women, children, livestock, and everything else in the city as your spoils. You may enjoy the plunder from your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.

    15then you must inquire, investigate, and interrogate thoroughly. If the report is true and confirmed that such a detestable act has been done among you,

    16you must surely strike down the inhabitants of that city with the sword, devoting it and all that is in it, including its livestock, to complete destruction.

    17Gather all the spoil of that city into its public square and burn the city and all its plunder as a complete offering to the LORD your God. It must remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt.

    20So Joshua and the Israelites completely defeated them with a great slaughter, almost wiping them out. But a few survivors managed to retreat to their fortified cities.

  • 18But you may keep alive for yourselves all the young women who have not known a man by lying with him.

  • 19'But your wives, children, and livestock—I know you have much livestock—may stay in the towns I have given you.'

  • 2then your elders and judges must come out and measure the distance to the surrounding cities.

  • 19You will destroy every fortified city and every major town, cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.

  • 24Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices, for the nations I am driving out before you have defiled themselves by all these things.

  • 22The LORD your God will drive out those nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you.

  • 14The Israelites took all the plunder and livestock of these cities for themselves, but they killed all the people with the sword, completely destroying them and leaving no survivors.
