5 Jonah then went out of the city and sat east of it. There he made himself a shelter and sat under its shade, waiting to see what would happen to the city.

2 And he prayed to the LORD, saying, 'O LORD, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own land? That is why I tried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from sending calamity.
11 So should I not care about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?'
10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, you will plant pleasant plants and set them with imported vines.
11 Though on the day you plant them you make them grow, and in the morning you make your seed blossom, yet the harvest will be a heap on the day of grief and incurable pain.
14 Then they cried out to the Lord, saying, "Please, Lord, do not let us perish for taking this man's life, and do not hold us accountable for innocent blood. For you, Lord, have done as you pleased."
15 They picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.

5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down to the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.
6 The captain came to him and said, "What are you doing, sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps your god will consider us, so that we will not perish."
7 Everyone who sees you will flee from you, saying, 'Nineveh is devastated! Who will mourn for her? Where can I find anyone to comfort you?'
9 Say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Will it thrive? Will it not be uprooted and its fruit stripped so that it withers? All its new growth will wither. It will not take a great effort or many people to pull it out by its roots.
10 Even if transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not completely wither when the east wind strikes it, drying up in the very garden bed where it grew?’
11 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
6 In the morning it flourishes and grows, but by evening it withers and dries up.

2 “Get up, go to the great city of Nineveh, and proclaim the message that I tell you.”
3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, following the LORD's command. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, taking three days to go through it.
4 Jonah began to go into the city, walking a journey of one day, and he proclaimed, saying, “In forty days Nineveh will be overturned!”
5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least.
10 But I, with shouts of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. What I have vowed I will fulfill. Salvation comes from the LORD.
2 When they had finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, 'Lord God, please forgive! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!'
3 So the Lord relented concerning this: 'It will not happen,' said the Lord.
6 The plant sprouted and became a low, spreading vine, with its branches facing the eagle and its roots growing beneath it. So it became a vine, produced branches, and sent out leaves.
12 While still in their greenness and not cut down, they wither more quickly than any grass.

11 But the fig tree replied, 'Should I stop producing my sweetness and my good fruit, to go sway over the trees?'
21 I planted you as a choice vine, from the very best seed. How then have you turned into wild, degenerate branches of a foreign vine for me?
9 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.
4 What more could I have done for my vineyard than I have already done? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes, did it yield only wild ones?
6 So the Lord relented concerning this: 'This will not happen either,' said the Lord God.
