29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and he went on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.
30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: 'If you give the Ammonites into my hands,
31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites will belong to the Lord, and I will offer it as a burnt offering.'
32Then Jephthah crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands.

5The Gileadites seized the fords of the Jordan opposite Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive from Ephraim tried to cross over, they would say, "Let me cross over." The men of Gilead would respond, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No,"
14Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites,
15Jephthah said to him, 'This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.'
27but as a witness between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the LORD at His sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD.’
28And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD, which our ancestors built—not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
28They replied, "We have clearly seen that the LORD has been with you. So we said, 'There should now be an oath between us and you; let us make a covenant with you.'"
7Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in the towns of Gilead.

24We did this because we feared that someday your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?’
19But all the leaders said to the assembly, 'We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.'
20This is what we will do to them: We will let them live so that no wrath will fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.
31The sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, "As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do.
1Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you."
27And Joshua said to all the people, "See, this stone will serve as a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us. It will be a witness against you if you deny your God.

20But if you reveal this matter of ours, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.
40Each year the daughters of Israel would go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
